2020 up bm3 tune only

Any one here done a bm3 stage 1-91 or stage 1- 93 tune on there 2020 or newer M550? The good. The Bad, The Ugly?
Reason for asking is I ordered the M-Link and I want to do a flash tune with it but it looks like bm3 is the only option.
Thanks

That would be me. I have Stage 1/93 on my 2020 M550i. The good: No difference to daily driving, fuel economy unchanged, totally livable. But when you punch it, you feel the difference right away. It really throws you back in your seat. That's also the bad: It's such a strong lurch forward that you can have trouble keeping your hands on the wheel and controlling the car if you're not prepared for it. Especially if you're not going in a straight line.

One other thing: I've found that the 93 tune is very sensitive to the quality of your fuel. I seem to have shaved about 0.2 seconds off of my 0-60 time just by adding a can of octane booster to the tank. I haven't tried the 91 to see if maybe it's better on pump gas than the 93.

I also recommend the xHP Trans tune if you get BM3.

With the M-Link it's a no-brainer. Just do it, and you will never look back.

A BIG Thank you. Just the kind of info I need albeit I am appreciative of your testing the waters first!

I also am wondering if the 91 octane tune would be safer as I just took a cross country trip and there were areas where 91 was the best you could find. That would mean you would need to pack some booster for a trip along with the summer months locally degrading the octane rating, so maybe the loss of 30 or so HP would result in a safer tune that would avoid the chance of knocking?

If you were to get both 91 and 93 tunes with bm3 how hard to flip on the fly so to speak?

It's certainly possible and I've heard of others doing this, but 'm not personally a fan of that approach. You would certainly need a wireless flash adapter compatible with BM3 and probably leave it on all the time. That means coding off the alarm that goes off if you lock the doors with an OBD connector attached. More importantly, you would have to remember to disable Bluetooth, close other apps, fasten your seat belt, etc. every time you flash. If you do it wrong, you could leave yourself stranded.

If I were taking a long trip through areas with no 93 octane, I'd just flash the 91 tune before leaving. I carry a bottle of octane booster for short trips through "91" zones and occasional bad tanks of gas.

You can have multiple maps, switchable from the steering wheel controls with BM3.

Don't hold your breath. But if they ever do release it for the N63, I'll be delighted.

With my 2020, best 0-60 is 3.26 on Stage 1/93 but I should be able to get below 3.2 with better fuel and technique. I haven't had a chance to test 1/4 mile.

I'll be doing stage 1 BM3 OTS next week.

Does xHP just magically work with this or is there something I need to do?

It's magic. Just flash BM3 Stage 1 and whatever xHP tune you want. I'm currently running with xHP Stage 2 and really like it. It's smooth for daily driving but provides very quick, firm shifts under moderate to hard acceleration. Stage 3 was a little much for me personally, but 25 years ago it would have been perfect.

As for my BM3 tune, the only "non-stock" option I chose was to eliminate the top speed limiter. I'm certainly open to suggestions on what works well for others.

I did stage 1 OTS 93 octane yesterday.

I’m on stage 1 xHP for daily, but I think it needs at least stage 2 when in sport/sport+ as the shifts feel a bit soft.

Impressions so far is the torque kick in 3rd+ from about 3500rpm. Wow. It feels fast.

My sports display now indicates 960Nm and 560kw. The kw jump to 400 something (need to look closely), but torque jumps to around what I estimate is 920Nm which if correct is a lot more than I was expecting (840Nm) based on the vague percentages BM3 provide. But BM3 might be showing a more accurate crank value, whereas stock it only went to 750Nm which was the alleged crank value whereas we know the cars make 750Nm to the wheels stock.

I did one 0-100 but launch control didn’t engage, I was 2 up and it was hot. That was 3.76 which I’ve done before but only in ideal conditions.

More testing to come.

A quick test with Dragy on the street and I did 0-100 in 3.45 with it spinning through a lot of first gear. This is with xHP stage 3 and a 1.6% slope (upwards).

My previous best was 3.6 at the dragstrip in drag mode.

I think 3.2 or perhaps less is possible at the strip.

0-60mph or 0-100km/h?

0-60mph is about 0.1s to 0.15s faster than 0-100.

My best 0-100 is 3.6 at the strip with xHP stage 3 drag mode is 3.6 0-100. That’s stock with BMC.

Looking on dragy there are only a couple of M550is doing sub 3 seconds.

That makes sense, best I’ve done complete stock is 3.7 0-100 which is about 3.55/3.6 0-60.

3.45 0-100 is about 3.3/3.35 0-60. I was using xHP but the difference is minimal when doing 0-60 or 0-100. Maybe a tenth. It’s the wheel spin that’s the killer. More testing, faster times to come.
