ok. so im having lasik on december 9th.

they understood my anxiety and i didn't mention anything about giving me something to relax and they told me they would give me some xanax.

apparently, its 2 separate lasers. one creates the flap, and the other does the rest. not really sure.

before i saw the doctor, they ran a bunch of tests on my eyes and took pictures with these really cool machines.

$5,000 dollars is what its going to cost and im not sure what, if anything, im going to get from my insurance company. at 18 dollars a box, and 2 boxes a month, that means i would be spending appx, $3,500 a year just on contacts. 100% worth it in my opinion.

i asked to see those super smashing lasers to take a picture but they probably thought i was a spy and they didn't really respond.

and on the way out, they gave me some rolos and a folder with all of this information that im probably not going to read because its graphic.

$18 x 2 x 12 = $432... Still kind of a lot to spend on contacts, but nowhere near $3,500.

Sounds like they are on top of it and use new technology.

Hope they don't turn the laser up too high and fry your brain.

dude.... had this friend that used to work at a laser eye surgery shop and he said someone left the laser on without realizing it for a couple mins and it burned something. Nothing major, and not during surgery but if the tech had left it on during surgery, I shudder to think what could go wrong... From what my friend described, it didn't sound like he worked in a top tier shop; said they hired a lot of Indian doctors.

Yeah, seriously. You're head will fucken explode. Or, well, implode. Ok fine. It will just burn a hole straight through your brain, cooking the proteins which will harden and it will look like a cheap piece of over cooked steak.

But seriously, can we talk about the laundry list of shit that can go wrong? OP will <3 and appreciate our help.

Just kidding. You'll be fine.

Correct, most doctors now use intralase. The first laser creates the flap, and then the bench you lie down moves sideways beneath the other laser.

The tests they did create a map of your eyes that the laser will reference when doing the correction.

This sounds like BS to me. The laser references what it "sees" against the map of your eye that was entered in by the technician. If things do not match up then it will not activate.

I have heard a lot of people said that your vision will eventually go back to the way it was before as time passes.

JayKay335i are you an Ophthalmologist? Don’t worry as long as you have a good doctor everything will be ok. I have been to a cornea specialist and oculoplastic surgeon just about every week for the last year and half. I was involved in an accident at work 1 1/2 years ago received chemical burns to both corneas. I am legally blind in my left eye and about 20/100 in my right eye, Have had my left upper eye lid reconstructed twice and have had 7 other procedures on all 4 of my lids. And am looking at getting an artificial corneal transplant in my left eye in the future. Unless they figure out how to generate corneas from my stem cells in the near future. Luckily I have a special contact lens (scleral lens) made for my right eye and now I am able to drive and get around during the day. At night I get to muck glare and starburst from the light to drive.

I'm claiming anonymity.

What chemical was your eye burnt with? Bases cause worse burns than acids due to acids causing the proteins to precipitate which actually buffers the cornea from more burning while you have no such luck with bases. You are lucky to have any vision. I'm glad to hear that you're doing well though. Scleral lenses are great and seem to be helping you immensely. What was the extent of the ocular damage? One of the big deciding factors on treatment/reconstruction is damage to the limbus, as this is were the stem cells are. A damaged limbus will make corneal transplants much more difficult and less likely to take. It seems that you are going in the right direction with the artificial corneal transplant, which is generally considered to be a last ditch effort. By the sound of it you have severely damaged your cornea/limbus, and possibly iris?

I had lasik done. Best money i ever spent. It does hurt when they put the eye opener thingys. You will smell the flesh burning when the laser is doing its thing. I tried to hold my breath. Take a pair of sunglasses because everything will be super bright after the surgery. Have a designated driver. I never use eye drops and have had no problems. The only thing i can complain about is my eyes do get dry a little faster than before lasik. But only happens when there is airflow. My freind says he can sometimes see halos when he looks at lights in the dark. I dont have that problem. Good luck.

My lasik deal was 20/20 for life as long as i do a yearly eye check up with them wich cost me $15 with insurance. They said that if my vision gets bad they would do it again free of charge. I went with key whitman in dallas and paid $3200.

yup
this was even more true with the older methods of eye surgery..
your eyes deteriorate constantly.. which is why old people need glasses

The chemical was alkali based. I have 50% scaring in my right eye and 90% scaring in my left eye. I was giving the option of a regular transplant and a transplant where they implant stem cells from a donar first for my left eye but the docors fell that it would not work. I have seen a few specialist who recomend a Boston Kpro but that had other issues invloved also. Either way I have to resolve my trichiasis and distichiasis that was caused by the trama first.

Distichisis from a chemical burn? I've never heard of that but its most definitely interesting. Reconstruction is always extremely difficult on anything involving the lids.

In the end, its all about risk vs. benefit vs. cost.
