Ted Williams, Homeless Internet Sensation, Offered Job by Cavaliers.By FanHouse Staff
| Follow on Twitter: @NBAFanHouse
Text SizeAAAPrint this page|EmailShare on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on DiggShare on LifestreamTed Williams, the homeless man with a "golden radio voice" that became an internet sensation overnight, was offered a job as full-time voiceover man and a free house by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"The Cleveland Cavaliers just offered me a full-time job and a house! A house! A house!," Williams exclaimed on radio station WNCI.

A rep for the team called into the radio show to make the job offer. The Cavs have confirmed the offer to FanHouse.

Williams quickly became a hit when the Columbus Dispatch posted a video on Monday morning of Williams panhandling on the side of a road. In the video, Williams showed off his impressive vocal skills.

Williams, a Brooklyn native, then explained how he trained to be a radio announcer before getting involved with drugs and alcohol, leaving him in his current situation.

"I've been out there about a year; I just didn't know anything like this would ever happen," Williams said earlier in the show. "There's so many words. I've already been compared to [Scottish singing sensation] Susan Boyle ... I'm just so happy."

According to Williams, local police called him "Radio man."

The Cavs' offer wasn't the only one Williams received, however. Support flooded in for his cause, with offers apparently coming from MTV and the actors behind voiceovers for "The Simpsons" and "Entertainment Tonight," amongst others.

"Just to get back to some normalcy and responsibility -- If I can get a job, whether it's a twenty-five or even $18,000, I'd be happy," he said. "At least I know God has me where he wants me."

Wow. Awesome fucking story. This guy is awesome, and whoever stopped to talk to him and post that video on youtube is equally awesome. I don't even care for the NBA but the Cleveland Cavaliers are my favorite team for now!

Turns out he is a convicted felon, and the jobs are requiring background checks.

How much should we pay him to record him fighting his homeless buddies to the death? Half a cheese steak and a refrigerator box, like normal?

Williams, 53, has been busted for theft, robbery, escape, forgery, and drug possession. He is pictured at right in mug shots (click to enlarge) taken as a result of those Ohio collars, which stretch back more than two decades

People can change. It could make a good rags to riches story if he can keep it together. It doesn't matter if you are convicted if you have enough talent. Look at Michael Vick.

Yeah most of what I read on the rap sheet is all things any of us would probably do if we were cold/hungry/alone on the street..

*edit*

(Insert Sarcasm) BTW, I think it's awesome that some jack-ass at the PD dug up his old mug shots and plastered them all over the internet. It'd most likely all come out anyway, but damn... give the guy a chance.

I bet TMZ is outside of his hotel in NY right now.

Yes. True. And background checks wouldn't matter for a voice, if he already did his time.

I must be an asshole, because I don't really care he's been clean for 2 years, that he has some decent voice, or that he was discovered on the side of the road.

The guy screwed up his life and I'd rather a guy that stayed on the right path get an opportunity over this clown. His voice would be good for radio, but seriously, that's not an incredible talent. Remember, straight talent isn't enough. Lots of people are talented. Life is about making the right choices and putting yourself in good situations. This guy has continually failed in doing so in his life of drugs and crime. To wipe all that away because he has a voice is just naive. If I were a business owner, I wouldn't hire him. I'm all for second chances, but he could get serious and take a job doing manual labor, cleaning, etc. and probably get on his feet more quickly than holding up a sign waiting for handouts.

To me, this is a hot story that will die and he'll be homeless again once his 15 minutes of Internet fame wears off.
