Need New Windshield
I picked up a rock chip yesterday that ended up cracking over half the windshield.
Any experience with getting replacement windshield at an aftermarket shop like Safelite vs the dealer? I assume the dealer subs it out any way? Also, it looks like rock chip protective film for windshields is a thing. Any experience with this? Seems like it might be worthwhile to protect my new $1000 windshield. If it works. Thanks! |

I got mine from the dealer and they did it themselves for $2300. I had windshield coverage in my insurance policy, so I only paid $100.

To each their own, but I'd see the film as a waste of money. It would have to be cheaper than an insurance deductible to be a cost savings (otherwise I'm just saving my insurance money). If it met that criteria then it would need to not get scratched or otherwise reduce visibility when it gets beat up by road debris otherwise there is another item to replace. Not to mention what it might due to reduce the accuracy of the front facing cameras that are tied into your safety systems. |

Had this happen on my G30 a few months back, took a rock chip in the morning commute that had turned into a sizeable crack that spread up the glass by the end of the day.
I went through my insurance (Allstate--$0.00 deductible for glass-only replacement) which directed me through to Safelite. It was a fairly painless experience, except the glass they originally ordered was aftermarket. The Safelite employee said they weren't sure why this happened since it was approved for an OEM replacement initially anyway, so they returned the aftermarket glass and had an OEM windshield back for the next week. They ran their recalibration procedure afterwards--not sure exactly what this entailed, but at this point everything seems to work as well as it did before the windshield was replaced, so I can't complain. As for a protective film, I wasn't aware of this being an option, but I would be concerned about visibility issues if it was truly thick enough to stop a speeding rock from damaging the glass. |

Thanks. My deductible is $1000, and the windshield is $900 and change from Safelite so I'll be paying out of pocket. About $300 of that is to recalibrate the lane departure sensor.

I literally just picked mine up an hour ago after having the same thing happen a week ago. Went ahead and got a brake fluid flush and oil change. Also had a tire with a nail in it so she's good to go.
Statefarm wanted to have some company come out and do it but I insisted on the dealer. They got the quote from the dealer $2100, and sent me a check. I would have the dealer do it personally but that's just me. They do have factory trained technicians to handle this. |

I have windshield replacement thru my auto insurance. I had safelite come to my house and do a mobile repair with calibration. I also requested OEM glass. It turned out perfect. I would recommend.

I went through this a couple of months ago. My major concern was with the replacement procedure--having reviewed the ~20 page procedure on newTIS (admittedly from a layman's perspective) I did not trust Safelite to do this in my driveway, regardless of glass quality. I had a little chat with my insurance company (where I made sure to remain very polite and cordial) and they agreed to cover most of the dealer replacement cost. My total out of pocket cost was ~$300, but as mentioned above, I appreciate the peace of mind knowing if there is an issue, there is one point of responsibility.

Your mileage may vary. I let Safelite replace mine and the HUD works at least as well as it did on the original windshield.

I ended up having my windshield replaced at a local body shop that does a lot of work on German cars. Didn't have the lane departure sensors calibrated, they work fine with the new windshield. Shop owner said they've only ever had to calibrate on one car after a windshield replacement and it was on an Alpha.

I did mine a the dealer. Working with insurance to get it done. Cost me a little bit more than safelite but I knew that the dealer would get it right and stand behind the work. Also I knew that I would get OEM BMW Glass and all other components. Some Safelite installers are ok but really they are only as good as the tech you get.

An important thing if you end up with leaks or calibration issues afterwards. |
