Apologies, I saw the info on a 7 series forum first and that post was in August 18 so it may have been launched then. I thought the post was from April but i just checked it again.

I tested this and it is true. My car is a 2017 but I had all new keys after the theft in Oct 2018. I got the motion sensing key.

BMW should offer this as a recall replacement for ALL comfort access owners. Bonkers the rest of us are left in the lurch.... 😕

i have followed this thread with interest, and i have a slightly different approach suggestion that I used many years ago on my first Corvette, a used '67 coupe bought in 1974. I lived in Cambridge MA near Boston at the time, which was notorious for car thefts. What I did was install a small solenoid in the fuel line with an on off switch so I could shut off the fuel when I parked. I installed a small rocker switch under the carpet on the the passenger side of the console where only I knew it was. It was not visible through the carpet. When I parked I turned it off. Sure enough, one Saturday night while it was parked in downtown Boston when I was visiting a friend, it got stolen. When we realized it was gone, we started walking around the neighborhood and in fact did find it a couple of blocks away parked on the street. It had run fine on the fuel in the float bowls but then just died and the crooks parked it. I called the police, a cruiser stopped by and I said I wanted to file a stolen car report. They refused to do so. The cop said, "Kid, there are hundreds of Corvettes stolen in Boston every year. Yours is the first one we've ever seen recovered. Be happy and go home." So I did.

Now, I am not sure you would really want to cut into your fuel line and do something like this on today's cars, but maybe one could wire an on/off switch to the fuel pump (s). Wouldn't deter crooks with a tow truck but might slow down others. As to the hidden switch, here are a couple of pics of a similar installation I did in my '95 ZR-1 (in this case to control electric exhaust cutouts). Just my little ol' $.02--Bob

What does the motion sensing mean? So if you leave your key on a shelf or something close enough to the car (or inside the car), after 3 mins someone can't unlock the doors unless the key is moved?

Not sure how alive this thread is, after some solid info. Had a 540i stolen, the order had keyless access removed. Police and BMW seem unsure how the relay theft works if the key is not comfort access enabled. I am unsure how you now really do secure these things and does the ghost system really work independently. ie if they get access to the diagnosis port to clone a key, does the ghost work independently from the ECU etc. ?

Sorry to read that your car was stolen.

With my limited knowledge I guess thieves must have cloned key when you were unlocking car and they were near your car copying it.

Not sure why immobiliser did not recognise a cloned key? Must be high tech thieves.

With Comfort access being vulnerable to some sort of replay attack, putting keys in a microwave is a very clever idea.

Building on the ideas earlier in the thread of being alerted to car being unlocked, I'm approaching this with multiple layers:

- if you have a garage door of your own (so this doesn't apply to condo buildings), you can put a smart controller on it that tells you when the garage door is opened/closed.

- put an apple airtag in the car somewhere - cheap version of a tracker

granted these aren't fool-proof...

now, that fuel switch idea - that is just so cunning - "as cunning as a fox who's just been appointed Professor of Cunning at Oxford University" (blackadder)

EDIT: one more thought - go old-school with an external steering locking mechanism

It is just a matter of how motivated the thieves are. Insuring properly is the safest bet.

You have cars being stolen via tow trucks and flat beds now. Nothing you do will stop that.

I keep my cars in the garage which is relatively safe. Have motion sensor security cameras on all corners on my house. The security cameras alert me on my mobile phone. Have the cameras more for my protection than the cars.

Unfortunately, if someone is determined to steal your car, they will. Kill switches, fob signal protectors or whatever won't stop them. What is more prevalent now in these tense times is car jacking. If a professional thief wants my car and is successful in stealing it, they usually will do it quick and without me knowing. Yes, that would absolutely suck but it is a materialistic object that can be replaced.

It is the desperate criminals that have no regard for life we should be concerned about. They are armed and desperate - bad combination. Yes, I am always armed (unfortunate reality) and am licensed to do so, but having to defend myself is unthinkable.

Please everyone - we all have cars that attract attention. Have your situational awareness on full alert, especially in shopping centers and gas stations. Not paranoid - but alert. Again, these are tense times we are living in now. Whether armed or not, always be ready to retreat and remove yourself and loved ones from a potential bad situation.
