Performance Tires vs Winter Tires

Hello,

I bought the 2023 BMW 540i XDrive G30, which is on the way arriving by the end of January as I was told, maybe a bit later, with performance tires, because I needed the 155 miles speed. I will be moving in Germany in 4-5 years so there is no speed limit in autobahn there, as all of you know. However the performance tires are very dangerous, something I knew before I even made the order. I was wondering if I can carry 2 sets of tires basically 6 months each set looks promising. Now, what tires this specific car needs and I do not trust all year long tires either, to be able to go skiing in the winter and not have to worry about an accident above all.
If somebody can help would be much appreciated. I would prefer BMW tires, because I love BMW period, but if they do not have the best product, I really need the best possible winter tires, to ensure mine and my wife's safety.

Thank you & Happy Holidays

If you will have the car in Germany, I believe winter tires are required during the winter season, so I think the authorities will make that decision for you. One of our German members can no doubt elaborate.

Yes, but meanwhile for at least 4 years I will be driving in the USA. So, If I want to go skiing I need a second set of tires. I live in New York so it's imperative during the winter to have that second set right away. Maybe even before the car arrives. which means this is the perfect time to buy because of the holidays. If anybody can suggest a set of 4 superb winter tires, it would be extremely important.

Thank you!

Pretty straight forward. First, you made the right decision on summer performance tires from the factory. Hopefully non-runflats which triggers the addition of the spare tire in the trunk. You run these from April to November. Get yourself a set of snow tires and wheels. Honestly, the BMW Online Store has great packages and decent prices. Run these wheels from December to March. All Seasons are "OK" for winter, but nothing like real snow tires, especially since you like to ski and presumably drive to the mountain. Since you have Performance tires coming, keep them on the rim and put them in the garage and beat up the winter set up. Your dealer can order you a winter set up and have it waiting to put on when the car drops.

I have been very happy with the Bridgestone Blizzaks. Great traction in the snow. They make a performance winter/snow tire also.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I just contacted my BMW agent and he will get back to me, so I can order a second set of tires from BMW and change them as soon as the car arrives w/o being charged.
Also, I made an extensive research and the consensus is that the performance tires need 45 degrees or higher to perform w/o issues. Therefore I am thinking to use winter tires actually for a bigger stretch. Possibly November through end of March to be perfectly safe. That's 5/12 months. To all of you who may not have thought about tires, I will conclude by saying, please take this matter seriously, especially if you have performance tires on your BMW's. You should not use them during the winter. For example you get a ticket in Germany, if you use performance tires during the winter. I will be posting regularly and I hope I will be able to help drivers very soon on various BMW 5 series subjects.

Merry Christmas to all & A Happy New Year!

Look at Nokian winter tires. They rate very highly and better than most you have heard of from Michelin or Blizzaks. I have used all three and the Nokians are the best winters. I had them on an older X5.

Correct, I think it is 40 degrees. I pushed mine this weekend as it was in the high 30's, but it came out of a heated garage. My car is now officially garaged until April.

Consider getting separate wheels for the snows. It is easier and cheaper in the long run. Plus you keep your summer wheels from getting winter/pot hole damage.

I have the Blizzaks on our e91. I used to have a set of Mich Alpins for our e60. Both are just incredible in winter conditions. I would have gone with the Mich X-Ice for the e91, but they didn't have the right size for our 17" rims.

Bottom line -- I am perfectly happy with the Michelins and the Blizzaks.

BTW, also have a '22 540i and love it.

The BMW of Manhattan was really disappointing. They are not willing to do anything. I had to buy the tires and now wait for the car to arrive by the end of January. Then I will place the tires to my BMW trunk and take it to a garage so they can change my performance to winter ones as soon as I have the car. I received no help at all from my sales person.
Instead I did everyhting on my own and thank you for your recommendations. I bought winter tires not season run flat, this is New York and it's currently about 15F. Very disappointing, considering that I custom made a 540i xDrive car (the last of the 5 series generation) that costs $77,445 + taxes! These are the tires I bought and believe me I did not have many choices with wheels that only accept 19" tires.

I am guessing your 540 will be arriving with 20" rims, runflat, staggered setup, on summer tyres.
This is an assumption, as Im in the UK.

First off, 275 rears on snow is a bit daft IMO, way too wide for safety.

Here, for winter, I dropped to 19", non runflat, and 245 all round on Conti Winter Contact.
(This is as small as I can go rim wise due to brake size)

While yet to test in severe snow, I am happy to date.
As has been stated, it would be preferable to get a set of winter rims than can handle the abuse that the weather brings, such as bigger potholes, sliding to the kerb etc.
Plus, if you drop the rear rims to 245, you will obviously need new rims there.

Again, personally, keep clear of diamond cut for winter rims, stay with painted / powder coat as much easier to repair when damaged.
They should also be cheaper.

I had to laugh a little as I was reading your tire choice. I knew that’s where you were headed. I purchased the exact same brand and model as we didn’t have many choices. I’m next door in CT and share the same horrible temperatures.

I purchased my M550i xdrive with the Bridgestone runflats installed. They certainly lived up to their reputation in the rain… horrible. I felt unsafe at highway speeds on a wet road. The Vredesteins are excellent so far. Excellent in heavy rain on the highway. They’ve been stable at moderate speeds on cold/dry pavement. I quickly hit 133 mph once when the 550 just felt like pulling there. As another member stated above, a 275 snow tire is kinda odd. My car will be parked if we see any serious snowfall. Lately, it’s been a light coating, slush or cold rain. The Vredesteins have performed very well in all conditions, good choice.

Check your owner manual. It gives you all of the acceptable wheel and tire sizes for your model BMW. It even recommends snow tire sizes if you look carefully for the "M+S" designation. Try Tire Rack for complete winter tire and wheel sets. I have always been satisfied with their products and service.

I am not planning to drive during snowstorms, but these tires are winter performance tires & by speaking to the people at Tire track they assured me if the roads are relatively clean I will have no issues with these tires all winter long. I originally bought the 19" M Y-spoke jet black wheels Performance run-flat. That meant I needed 19" tires to go along with the wheels and I had just 2 options so it can fit in the wheel and be a solid winter tire absent snowstorms. I am not planning to drive during snow even with winter tires. Having obviously bought every good package for the car these tires at $1,000, will do the job for me. In any case, this topic other than informative, could be left aside, because I got the tires already. They are in my basement and the car is all that's left to get. Once again, thank you all and a happy New Year! By the way BMW #3 most reliable car right now! That's a nice badge to carry with you. Super excited about the next few years hopefully.

I know it’s been mentioned, but I would absolutely get winter wheels to go with the tires, if I could afford to do so.

I’m in the south (the mid south as we call it) in the home of the King, Elvis Presley. People here either roll the dice with summer tires all year or just run all seasons. I spent extra time getting my wife an X7 with 21” wheels so we could find all seasons for it (it also came with them). I’m not taking chances with the family’s safety. From December until March we will have spurts of temps in the 20’s and 30’s. Two weeks of cold and then a week or two of 40’s and 50’s. Rinse and repeat. Not much snow or ice and when we get it, it melts in a day or two. So it’s all about temperature here.

I expect I’ll find an M550 with summer tires on it, as I’d prefer to get one with 668 wheels. It’s my car, not the main family car. So I’ll just wear out whatever is there and then replace with a “performance” all season non runflat. Maybe I’ll get lucky and find one with a spare tire kit and non runflats already.

Lastly - this is what blows my mind and kind if pisses me off… If I weren’t so obsessive and spend so much time researching and reading the forum, I wouldn’t know any of this. On an M or “M lite” car, okay. But they’re selling these X7’s to soccer moms left and right down here and not mentioning the tires at all. Most people I talk to just assume if the dealer sells them a car, it’s appropriate for their climate. They don’t realize they’re buying a vehicle with summer tires that are dangerous in cold temps. They go buy a non M sedan or SUV and don’t even think about it. I know the consumer has to carry some responsibility, but it wouldn’t hurt to make a better effort to educate people in these hybrid climates.

That’s one thing. But the X7 is hard to find without 22”’s if you want certain options and you will have a very hard time finding all seasons for 22’s.

The car ended up costing so much money, that I could not spent more money on both extra wheels + tires. I bought all good packages as I mentioned, so this is all I could afford. $950 worth of winter tires that will not cover me 100% during snow storms but they are good in rain and they are solid tires in the price range I was looking for. I provided the grading in evey surface fr people that may want to buy them as well.

What you suggested was in my mind, but a car that should be around $75K including taxes, now has a price tag of $85K with taxes and that did not allow me to do just what you suggested. Again no help received from BMW of Manhattan when I called to discuss ordering extra Tires and Wheels. If I had gotten a good package, I may have bought that package and let something else out. Instead they just told me it's not their job what I am willing to do with my tires. Very unfortunate.
As for what BMW does not tell you, is a stunner. If you guys think you are safe with all season run tires, check the video at tirerack.com. The car has very little traction on ice. It's amazing how bad all season tires are for places like NY, Boston and the entire east coast in pretty much. Please be careful and I brought this subject up, because I needed consultation, but I am experience enough to know that I do need winter tires in N.Y. Some people just do not & you are right about that as well.

Thanks again!

That’s really disappointing for the dealer you just ordered a ~$75k car from, before fees and taxes, to not be any help at all. If I were to guess, I’d say they’re probably a corporately owned dealer. BMW of Nashville is the closest to me, outside my home town market. I don’t even call them anymore. My best experience has all been with locally owned dealers that still care about relationships.
