While I understand it is a highly personal and subjective decision, I would like to ask this group's help in deciding if I should cancel or keep the maintenance and warranty plans.
  1. Given how little I drive (less than 7,500 miles a year) and the exclusions of what is "covered", is pre-paying for the maintenance worth the cost?
  2. Do I have the option to purchase a full 4-6 year extended warranty from BMW once the CPO warranty expires?

Two weeks ago I purchased a CPO 2021 BMW 540i with 12,800 miles. I was pushed hard by the finance guy to elect the platinum maintenance and warranty coverage, but after looking at the exclusions and overall cost to own, I am having serious doubts on the value of those plans. Both contracts state that I have 60 days to cancel for a full refund without penalty; after 60 days it's a prorated refund of the remaining term.

I was told by finance that the maintenance and warranty plans start from the date the vehicle was first entered into service, not when purchased as CPO. Additionally, finance told me that the following clause in the signed maintenance agreement does not apply to my CPO and that the expiration date of 03-03-2027 is correct — “‘Coverage’ under the Program includes: a) factory recommended maintenance […] for a total of 72 months or 100,000 miles after 36 months have passed since the Enrolled Vehicle was first retailed.”

From finance —

The factory maintenance extension purchased will start from the original in-service date and cannot be changed. Three years free Maintenace only applies to original customer who purchased brand new. BMW Ultimate Care coverage is not transferable for all model years 2021 and older.

Background
  • I don't drive much and have averaged 7,000 miles per year for the last 6 years.
  • Warranty: 72 mo / 45,000 miles @ $84.58 per month ($4,949 total) — Expires 07-01-2029
  • Maintenance: 72 mo / 100,000 miles @ $99.10 per month ($5,799 total) — Expires 03-03-2027
  • CPO Warranty — Expires 03-03-2026

Attached is a breakdown of what is not covered in the maintenance, warranty, and both combined plans.

Maintenance really depends on what package you get but to be honest based on your mileage id say just put money away in an account to cover maintenance and warranty work. Also your costs they are asking for are far too high in my opinion. I have the extended warranty for an m550 and it was like 4-4.5k if I recall correctly. Maint was around 3700 which includes brakes in my package. Also mine was not a CPO which is why I got it and I drive about 15k a year which to me should hopefully make it pay for itself. For me its all about just not wanting to worry about most things with the vehicle due to the amount of mileage I drive. Lastly, I believe you have to purchase one with a current warranty in place not after it expires if you really want one.

Thanks for the advice! I was offered the platinum package, and if it makes a difference on how it was priced out, I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I live in San Jose so not that far from you. Also as an FYI you can always buy it direct from BMW through the app if I recall (not the best way) or reach out to another dealer as any dealer can sell you direct bmw Maintenace/warranty plans. FYI my 7 year warranty was for 100k miles. You may also want to check dates as its typically 7 years from when the car was built not when you bought the plan. Overall id maybe consider the warranty assuming you can get a much better deal but maintenace seems excessive even under my plan cost for you to drive 28k miles over the next 4 years.

I bought a 2020 540i with 33k miles it has almost two years left on the CPO warranty but I added 2 more years of “ bmw “ warranty for 4200. I drive a decent bit every year and for me I wanted the piece of mind. This is my 3rd bmw and I know what typically comes due around the 50-70k miles so me personally
I’m covered for 4 years unlimited miles.

The one idea about putting away money for msint is very smart that someone said. The finance manager also pushes this shit because they make there commission. This is why I hate car shopping. Unless your a serious DIY guy, get a warranty so you have peace of mind

If you go in the bmw app you can choose different bmw stores and buy warranty’s. Different locations have different pricing
