Winter Delivery on PSS
Taking PCD in a few weeks and was planning to spend a couple days in Asheville on the way home to Atlanta. My M550 is coming with Michelin PSS, and I've read all the warnings about driving below 40/20F.
Aside from not driving like an idiot, any recommendations for precautions to take on the trip to Asheville and then home? As much as the extended forecast for that area can tell at this point, overnight lows look to be in the low 20s and highs in low/mid 40s. I do expect to need to start driving around 8 or 9am one day...but on other days can wait until it's warmed up a bit outside...though that would probably still be right around 30F. Not getting winter or AS tires as this delivery trip will literally be the only time I need to drive the car in temps this cold. After we get home (where it was almost 60F on Christmas Day) it'll be kept in a climate controlled garage and we've got a 4Runner for whenever the weather isn't suitable. |

If the roads are dry, you'll be okay, but if there's snow or ice, I won't recommend driving on the PSS.

Thanks! Yes, we're hoping it stays dry. I was a little worried about cracking/damaging the tires if it gets too cold, but it sounds like 20F is right at the border, so as long as we're taking it easy and not driving at the coldest point of the night (which we won't be) I'm hoping we'll be fine.
We'll of course keep an eye on the forecast and adjust plans if it looks like there will be snow/ice. But one way or another we've got to get it home that weekend. |

It is impossible to be fine with the summer PSS tires in weather below 40. Has little to do with snow traction and more to do with the rubber compound in performance summers which turn to stone in frigid temps and sticky soft shoes for summer.

We had a day in the 20's with a touch of snow before I got the Michilen PSS off. No traction in snow and harsh ride. Had a few other days below 40° too. Not sure about 40° threshold but below 32° sucks.
Don't think I damaged the tires but probably accelerated wear. |

That was my understanding as well. I was questioning whether the prior poster was talking about all-seasons vs. PSS. I'm assuming all-seasons, in which case that experience doesn't really inform my situation.

If it's looking really bad/questionable we'll just skip Asheville and come straight home from PCD, but we're looking forward to a quick weekend away. |

As someone who has driven with PSSs in cold, dry weather, be extremely careful. Even with no snow, frost or ice on the ground you'll have significantly reduced traction. Those tires turn into hockey pucks below 40F. Every time I made a turn the traction control lights would come on and I could feel the back end getting loose.
