Adaptive icon lights
Brilliant. Saw it for the first time last night.
... So I've not had adaptive lights before so the whole dancing around cars thing is new to me but the brightness and colour of the lights combined with the movement around cars was fantastic. Whether there was one two or many cars it handles them very well. Even around fast corners where it needs to react fast it was doing well. I reckon a few people get a brighter than normal light, but it's generally not a full beam they see. Also with the beam off the lights are pretty high as it is so I reckon people generally get dazzled by the icons. Anyway was very pleased with it last night so wanted to feed back to the peeps.

Yes. the same experience here. What impressed me most, is how it widens its width of coverage when on unlit motorways to almost morning-like brightness. The ability to direct the beam away from oncoming vehicles just the left of the vehicles is another impressive character.
However I have noticed that a substantial number of G30s currently on the road up here in the North East does not have icon light |

I'm not sure to be honest. I simply took what came on the standard car and added on high-beam assist for a small charge. They really are excellent lights. I'm glad I didn't spend any more on them.

Very true!
I've had them on my new F32 LCI and they're brilliant The response time is very good and also the focus of the beam

I paid €1900 or so to upgrade to the Icon (had them on my previous F10 - in LED not Xenon -) and found the LED version better than the Xenon version I had on a F30 a few years ago (that was only a €900 upgrade from stock halogens by the way). Although th Icon package also includes headlight washers,in retrospect adding a less than €200 option to add high beam assist to the standard LEDs might have left some cash to be spent on better options. At least in Ireland, I think it is seriously overpriced, and I discovered they do not even include the small orange LEDs on each corner that my F10 had. Summary: not worth the money.

You can not get selective beam feature with ordinary LED. The adaptive LED only means the light turning right or left when the steering wheel is turned.
The selective beam feature of the ICON LED is quite sophisticated. It includes varying the width, length and direction of the beam based on the situation such as time of the day, nature of the road, cars around, presence of road signs etc. You get LED indicator with ICON LED whilst the the indicator with ordinary LED is Halogen. Whether it is worth the extra cash is a matter of opinion. If you are planning to keep the car, I suspect ICON LED might become standard with LCI and the ordinary LED would look quite outdated by then if the exterior appearance of the car is important to you. |

I have not picked up my car yet but opted Adaptive LED Lights , I'm sold on the way these look and enhance the exterior look of the car .It's not all appearance at all . I think albeit standard lights are very more than adequate this new technology will have become even more stepped up further forwards in illumination wise

My 5 cents on the topic....
I have Adaptive LED Lights on my F10 and I appreciate the functionality (different in US than in Europe unless coded), but I dont like the design of the new Adaptive LED Lights on G30 (blue car from the post above) or G11 or the 3 series. That flattened C shape thingy with the line going towards the grill just seems too awkward of a design departure from otherwise true iconic BMW corona lights. That line is just unnecessary. The fact that headlamp housing touches the grill doesn't help the cause here either, but we cant opt that out. I like the design on the new X3 or the 8 Series lights way better.

Ok thought so
Yeah I think it looks different but personally I think circles is nicer. But I'm not bothered coz I don't see the headlights directly really. For me the beam and colour is important. The comment earlier is spot on - that brightness is just like daylight and on darker roads it's much nicer on your eyes than a fuller more narrow beam. The high beam assist i would have been happy with too but feel the intelligent splitting functionality is really useful. I drive on many roads where you'd still like some high beam but not dazzle oncoming cars and this is perfect for that. Not arguing about he cost - it is steep but I feel it was money well spent for something I intend to keep a long time. |

May I say Adaptive Headlamps ,icon lights, are the Goldilocks of the lights in the same way G30 is the Goldilocks of the cars .
I'd like to drive in roads with no aid of street lights but would like to have lamps to turn dark roads into daylight without dazzling oncoming cars

It amazes me how hung up people are on the visual appeal of the lights. I can honestly say that never even occured to me as a point to consider when i added the vis package to my order.
As my commute is 90% in the dark for 6 months of the year the extra lighting functionality was the selling point for me. Once youve seen adaptive led lights in action on a dark twisty country lane with frequent other cars around not many people would want anything else. I guess if all you do is city or lit main road driving you wouldn't see the point in them. |
