2020 M550ix to get 530 HP 8 series motor

Some, no doubt will jump on this, but my 460 HP works for me.

I was just about to post this. I also believe it will be tuned down to leave the M850i as the flagship, but a non M5 5-Series that makes 500hp from the factory, well I guess I'm not surprised. Good deal for those buyers next year though.

As an aside, that 530HP figure is about what Dinan got on the dyno from the current base engine. $1,700 will get you 590 now.

New engine, give them a couple of years to work the bugs out. Now is the time to get an M550i!

It's the same engine, just a newer iteration of the same N63 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8.

There are quite a few changes (for the better), though. Should be pretty safe, but I wouldn't get the first year. There will be some time for BMW to fix early issues based on the M850i which comes earlier, so maybe the first year of the M550i with the new engine isn't too risky. Still, I would wait a bit.

Interestingly, when Dinan tested the G11/G12 750i - supposedly with the same N63TU2 engine as the M550i - officially rated at 443 HP / 479 TQ (very close to the official M550i with "M Performance upgrades" +13 HP & +1 TQ) - it really has 464 HP / 574 TQ... But the M550i dynoed (-on the same dyno-) at 540/595???

So, does the M550i already have that new M850i engine in it, and it's just not publicized??? It appears to have 76 more HP and 21 more TQ than the current 750i... Actual dyno numbers for the 2018 M550i are already/still higher than the proclaimed output of the "new" M550i/M850i engine (523 HP / 553 TQ).

Ponder that.....

No, the German manufacturers always under rate their engines.

Underrating of power is a given... Why the huge difference in power between 2 models that are supposed to have the same engine?

The other big question is surely if the engine hardware is the same? The M2C guys are quite excited about putting the M4 CS tune on their cars and I wonder if early M550i owners will be in a similar position.

If that's true, I'm hoping to get 650hp+ on 2020 M550i with Dinan...

sorry to bump up an old thread, but figure this is till relevant info.

curious as to what the m850i's dyno, and if they are closer to the factory rated 530hp(while still being underrated) figure than the current m550i motor is. In "theory", bmw can rate the 2019 M550i as 530hp and be right on the money with the engines measured power.

0-60 times of the m850i are however about .2 sec faster and they practically weigh the same as the m550i, so the 2020 M550i's will see an improvement in performance.

460 to 530 HP is a significant jump may be worth the wait. Current plan is to order a m550 in spring

It would be a good move if the same exhaust set up is put in M550i. The exhaust on m850i sounds amazing. It is probably the best sounding stock exhaust in current BMW line up

yup, you're onto something. the n63 used in the pre-lci 7 series and current 650i is rated pretty much on the money, whereas the n63 used in the g30 m550i is very underrated, making the 540/595 figures as you mentioned stock.

the m850 motor definitely has more power though than the g30 m550i though, since it does the 1/4 in about .04 sec faster with a 1-2 mph higher trap. I would probably put the m850 motor as somewhere in between the stock g30 m550i and dinan tuned g30 m550i.
