HUD area rattle

Hi everyone,

I have recently noticed a tapping on glass kind of sound when going over bumps that appears to come from the HUD area around the dashboard. Anyone else noticed the same? I have a 2017 540i.

TIA,
Jim

Take a look into the HUD hole from outside the car. Something may have fallen in and you need a vacuum to get it out.

Hi, I have that exact rattle in my ‘19 540ixMsport. Thinking I could fix it myself, I tried to access that area by removing the plastic panels under the dash (to no avail). Then I tried to remove the left side panel of the dash, but even with online instructions, I couldn’t get it off. In my case the rattle is worst when starting out on a cold morning. After around 15 or 20 minutes the rattle ceases, until the next day! This is why I hesitate asking the dealer to take a look. I’m sure they’ll say they couldn’t repeat the issue. If you get a resolution please share. Thanks.

If you're under warranty. I would record a video of it and give them the video when I drop off the car. No need to hunt this down when BMW has techs capable of sorting it out.

Man, recording a video of it. So simple and yet I don't think of it.

I had a problem in my old convertible where the fan would put out a high pitch whine. It would eventually go away. I brought to the dealer while under warranty and they couldn't reproduce. I got fed up with that dealer because they always screwed up any repairs. So I brought to a different one, of course car was out of warranty, they immediately found and resolved the issue " bad resistor on the board " as well as a warning that had triggered 800 times or so about the seat belt tension.

So even with the video will depend on the dealership
