I think the Apple Carplay streams over WiFi just like Airplay. So in theory the bandwidth should be multitudes better that BT. It shouldn't have any trouble streaming lossless audio over WiFi. Can you feel any difference when playing audio over BT from your Android vs streaming audio over CarPlay?

In terms of downloading to a USB, I am pretty sure you can copy or burn the songs to a USB drive on a PC or Mac via iTunes, but they would have to be purchased music. No way is Apple going to allow you to copy song files to external devices on the monthly subscription plan. We will see how the music sounds now streamed.

Turn on lossless audio and turn the three choices under it up all the way.
I think you could just connect your phone directly via lightening to the usb port on the car and that should do the trick. No USB drive required. Play directly from the Apple Music app?

[EDIT] - Guess I misread your post. Yes! Let me know how it sounds with the lossless turned on! Does it also fire up Apple CarPlay? Even if the streamed music turns out to be lossless on the B&W I will make the switch from Android to Apple.
So far so good. I'm streaming. Not sure if I can tell the difference. Using Apple CarPlay. I don't have any interest in using cables or the car's internal system (ID6).

Wireless and lossless are not friends in our cars. Pretty sure anything played over BT or wireless in the car may play lossless, but the resolution is defeated via the connection and the extra fidelity will be lost. Need to go USB if you want the full resolution music in the car.

Makes sense. I will test it out at some point, but don't you have to kill Apple Carplay and use ID6/7, or does the phone show up under USB when plugged in? I have a charging cable plugged into the USB port in front of the wireless charging pad. I will take a look and hopefully do some test. But I don't keep any music on my phone. It is all streamed from Apple Music, so hopefully lossless streaming to the phone and out the cable will work.

I created a separate thread on this rather than continue to hijack this one! Thanks OP for letting us audiophiles get off topic.

There are a lot of different option packages for the M5 50 if you look around long enough you'll probably find one with more options than less and the pricing doesn't seem to be tremendously different depending on where the car is loaded or strapped so try and find one with more options.

The 20 inch 668M wheels are gorgeous on this car when I was shopping for mine that was a must-have dealbreaker I would not buy a car without them. I have heard that they can bend if you hit really bad potholes but you could probably destroy any high-quality wheel if you hit bad enough holes.

I got mine with a full leather Dash and the Alcântara headliner those two options make the interior feel so much more upscale if you can find one with those go for it.

I have the upgraded leather seats with massage functions and ventilation it's a nice option to have but not a must-have I find the massaging function nice I use it often in the car some people claim they don't ever use it. The ventilation function is nice it does not cool you off tremendously but if it's hot outside you can feel cool air blowing up on your back side and up on your shoulders

The driving assistance pro to me is a must have it will keep the car driving with and it's lane and modulate your speed with cars in front of you with the adaptive cruise control… once you have it you will not want to car without it especially if you drive in stop and go traffic it is amazing.

Exterior and interior colors are tremendously subjective I personally think the darker colored cars look better with the stock cerium gray accents so look for Mediterranean blue carbon black or black sapphire. If you end up with white or silver I think the car does look better if you retrofit all the cerium accents to black or carbon fiber which looks great but that's just an additional expense.

No matter which one you get it's an awesome car. You get insane amounts of power and in sport plus mode it truly is a really sporty car but when you put it in comfort mode or a standard sport mode is still retains the luxury and comfort of a standard five series.

My mother has a highly optioned 540i - and while that's a great car at the power is nothing compared to the M 550.

Hi
I just bought a 2018 M550, carbon black w Smoke grey merino interior. No CPO. 7k miles. It's fully loaded, MSRP was over 96K.

Power is tremendous, ride is super smooth.
B&W audio system - sounds great but not much else to compare to. Sig better than Bose in porsche.
Mileage - terrible. 14-15 local, 20-23 highway. But thats not why we buy these type of cars.

Enjoy either one.

Well some idiot bought that car right under my nose. I was at the dealership. Test drove it and fell in love. Had a quote and everything. All set to trade in the 650. Sales guy about to send me over to the Finance department. And the GM approaches. "Sorry sir, but the car was promised to someone else by another one of our dealerships". Can you believe that?! Long story short, I'm sticking around until I find that spec again. Thanks everyone for answering all of my questions.

Sorry to hear. I had a similar experience, though I was buying sight unseen from a bmw dealer on the other side of the country. They were about to overnight me the paperwork, and an hour later called me and told me that the car was in fact spoken for already. I’ve purchased 3 BMWs in 3 different parts of the country, and each time, I’ve encountered issues where at least one dealer was confused about their inventory.

There’s a really wide range in how well speced these cars are and how they’re priced. The top spec ones are over represented in communities like these. In the real world, most of them don’t have luxury seating package or cold weather package, let alone dhp and b&w which are fairly rare. Not that there’s anything wrong with those cars, but it makes it tough both to find and actually close a deal on a heavily loaded one.

You have to act fast as well. One thing I noticed is that many of them don’t show up on bmwusa.com until a few days after the dealer has listed them, and they seem to put them on autotrader or cargurus first, and in these cases, the car may already be sold by the time you see it. The lower spec ones can sit on the lot for weeks, while the top ones can disappear in hours.

I lurk around on Cargurus all the time. As for options, I see from the inventory that not all people care enough to max out. It is the drive at the end of the day. With cars, I expect nothing but the best, so I don't have buyer's remorse. I know it's actuality silly and we learn to adjust around what we have. Makes it really challenging to find the right one in the short term. But that's the game for me lol. I'm patient until I find the one that I love. There will be more. And I will get it sooner or later. But it will be an M550i that's for certain. Now be it 2018 this year or a 2019 the next.

I got my 18 CPO after seeing it on CarGurus! SAW it, called the dealership. Negotiated a small 100% refundable deposit, drove out 2 days later, test drove it and left with it.

Sorry it didn't work out. There'll be another soon.

After a bunch of searching, I just had my 2018 CPO m550i delivered last week. Upgraded from a 2014 550i M-Sport. Bought it sight unseen from CA (shipped to MD). Fully loaded except the B&W (had HK on the last car and this...sounds fantastic and never heard the B&O or B&W so don't really care to know what I'm missing lol). Love the 668 wheels and the massaging seats.

Although this car is pretty much a newer version of my last car, it just drives so much nicer and the car overall is just much nicer. This one is Alpine white, as was the last so only like 2 people even noticed that it was a new car and those are car guys. My neighbors/family all never even realized it was a diff car🤦🏽*♂️. Not sure that I love that BMW threw a M badge on here, but it is what it is!

Anyway, happy hunting. You'll find one!

Great spec, welcome to the club!
Bid farewell to my 650. She was a keeper. I actually cried a little.

And thank you! Glad to be a part of this eclectic group.

Excellent spec car! Can't wait to hear your thoughts after a few thousand miles.

I'm looking for something similar (though not Sapphire black). Pretty much "Set Options=all".

Here she is! They f***ed up the side skirts, bent a wheel and popped a tire, BUT, she's amazing. Will go into the shop as is customary for all my past purchases and rehab under warranty for a few days. But it looks amazing. And drives fantastic. The B&W sounds incredible. Placed an order for an iPhone for the CarPlay business (goodbye Android after 11+ years I guess).

Thanks again all of you! Glad I reached out.
