imho m6 is the ugliest coupe i have seen but if you want useless back seats, a awsome looking car, and a fun time go with a austin martin. you can never go wrong with an austin martin. your friends will be amazed your family will love it as well. BUT if you like the m5 and the m6 and you had to chose and its your daily driver go with the m5 hands down.

But...
The M5 really has no equal in its class. No other sedan in that size comes close to it's performance equal.
ever heard of the the mercedes e63? while i hate the way it looks it it and equal or maybe even better than the m5. most reviews say the e63 is better. so the m5 is not in a league of its own. and the rumored audi rs8 is on the horizon and is supposed to be faster than both. and if you really like/believe the rumors/spy pics then youll also know about the update to the m5(some say twin turbo?). but in the end the m5 gets my vote. i like both but i like the m5 a little more. if it were my money i wouldnt buy either though.

Go with the E63 is all you want is straight line acceleration. If you want to have fun in the turns also, I'd stick with BMW.

You will have a blast. Get lots of rest before the trip.

If you get a chance walk around the compound at lunch, lots of cars there that are not the streets yet.

The hotel is right beside the Michelin HQ, see if you can get some free tires.

I personally like the M5 better. Though performance wise, they're both almost equal, like the E90 and E92 335i's

OP: I'd get the M5. As said above, if you want a fast coupe in that price range there are plenty of other options whereas the M5 is unique. Big sedan that stays even with 997 Turbos and F430s with a few mods = win.

not really, if you've seen the top gear review, the M6 became last around the track against the 997 CS and the aston vantage. I guess the M5 would be able to deliver that wnormous power better than the M6.

Ya, I saw that episode too. It just comes to show the 997 CS is faster around the turns. Dinan Stage II suspension with H&R springs and good tires and it'll be a complete different story, cause the M6 sure has the power!

The M6 is faster and more agile than the M5 as it's lighter. So no, the M5 wouldn't be able to deliver the power better than the M6.

Oh and that M5^^ is beautiful!

If you track, there is no ideal car for every track.
  • Miata's are almost untouchable in 1st -2nd gear courses / autocrosses
  • M3s and 911s are great for 2nd - 3rd gear courses
  • Vettes / GTs including the M6 do well in 3rd - 4th gear courses (like Spa / Mosport etc)
Do I care if a Miata kicks M6 butt around an autocross course?? Absolutely not because he has to drive the car in public!

Actually you are wrong with this opinion that there is no ideal car for every track, a few spring to mind. The GT2, GT3RS, Caterham R500, the F430SC and the R8 but to name a few.

On any track weight is the key to producing a car which is both capable of a tight track as well as a long and flowing one. This is why the M6 will have problems on anything other than a track with long straights and fast flowing corners. Currently there is only two M cars in production which is suited to track work and they are the new M3 and the Z4M coupe, all others are to compromised for anything other than a bit of fun.

Actually weight is one of many variables. Others may include weight distribution, power etc and most importantly tires.

Every track is different and no car is best for all. Every car is a compromise.

I will take my M6 against your RS4 / S5 anyday of the week on any track that doesn't involve snow.

T-Bone,

When did I include either the RS4 or the S5 in my comments, I agree that unless the track suited the RS4 the M6 will be a bit quicker and as for the S5, it wouldn't even be in the reckoning.

All of the above variables only play a smaller roles next to weight, if the chassis is well designed and balanced then everything else falls into place. This is what making the cars I mentioned before so great for track work.

A little Catherham has less than half the M6's power but it would totally destroy it on the track, so power isn't that important.

The GT2 and GT3RS wouldn't be classed as having the engine in the best place but like the Caterham they too will destroy the M6 on the track, so weight balance isn't that important either.

And finally the tyres, well yeah they can make a big difference but unless it's a well designed chassis the difference they make will be less, so again it all comes down to how well the dynamics of the car has been designed and only the smaller M cars come close to achieving this goal and it's all to do with weight.
