You complete me. My thoughts exactly. I truly and thoroughly enjoyed my f80 and would get another one. But my aging body seems to be more inclined towards the plush interior and lofty handing of a 5 series. I need some pampering. It's refreshing to see that some "get it", and understand what the M550i is about. Great post! |

That said, when I got my 550i onto the Autobahn for the first time, it was 'Holy Moley'! In Comfort, and not even trying to push it, you could tell that beast just wanted to go!

But, but, but, I do really enjoy it for what it is, and it does have more than stickers: M-brakes, lowered chassis (10mm), M-adaptive suspension, M-steering wheel, and probably a few other technical features I can't recall but I'm sure you can read about.....oh yes, and a vastly-restricted range of body colors Just don't get suckered by "M-options" every BMW has them now.....for me the M550i is no more nor no less then a 550i with a complete "M-package" - for good or for bad! Ok, enough self-justification for today.....

But, otherwise, I think you said what I was thinking (and should have said). The ///M cars are just the top end of the regular 2/3/4/5-series cars with the M-Sport package as a default option. There's no real M in them.

OP, I have driven 550's since 2005 for one reason, torque. What's the saying: "People buy horsepower but really want torque"? My wife drives an X5d and any time I get a loaner for either car with a six I notice it revs too high, has a high pitched engine note, and is not as easy (comfortable) to drive away from a stop as a V8 or diesel. I want a V8 rumble or diesel clatter!

as pointed out here already, the M550 is the spiritual successor to the 550. it's not an M car. BMW is simply ape-ing Mercedes never ending quest to put their stupid AMG badge on anything that moves. The Mercedes E43 "AMG", for example, is not any faster than the G30 540i xdrive, but Mercedes is selling tons of them at stupidly inflated prices because the average person who buys an E43 is a simpleton who doesn't know any better.
Mercedes is shameless with their AMG badging. BMW is not nearly is a bad but still guilty of using a once iconic symbol to move regular road cars at marked up pricing. however, even though i do not believe that the M550 should be badged as an M car, i think it's by far the best value when it comes to over powered luxury sedans. there is really nothing else like it. it's great on the road, it isolates you from terrible pavement and road noise, but has an absurd amount of power for when you feel like earning a reckless driving ticket. if i lived in a rural area, i would have sprung for an M550. but i live in NYC. the speed limit here is 25MPH in most places, and during rush hour you can't do 25. so i saved a few thousand by going with a 540i. and i'll continue to save buckets of money on gas because at low speeds, M550i gets very thirsty. |

This is all relative. If you have had not-so-quick cars, then maybe a 540 is enough for you.
For those of us who have had super powerful cars, 0-60 in 4.9 seconds isn't going to do jack. There is a much larger difference between a 550 versus the 540 than there will be the 550 vs the M5 and the small difference does not justify the $30k price for the M5 over the 550. I also don't know how I feel about the M badging on the 550. I tend not to like stuff like that...especially after having owned real M cars. I'm sure the 540 is a solid car.....but I think it comes down to power. I don't think people buy the 550 for the M badging....they bought it because even if it was badged a Pokemon 550i, it still is the fastest BMW to date and will only be surpassed by another model $30k more. All of this talk is really an indictment of the M5. If you don't think a 550 is worth the extra dough, you can imagine how the M5 looks to people.

Absolutely agree re feelings for M5 but one has to be practical and realistic.....once the daily commute is done with a dream would be some kind of ultra-daft Lambo.....

Obviously, the M5 is an even bigger overkill, but I understand that some people get satisfaction from owning something special or the "ultimate" even if they can't actually make use of its capabilities. The M550i is kind of neither here nor there. If you're practical, go with the 540i. If you're an enthusiast, go with the M5. |

So, I'm not really sure I see your point. It's kinda like a nice steak vs. ground beef. The ground beef still gives you nutritional value, and you don't need the steak. But, sometimes, you just prefer the steak. It all comes down to personal preference.

Great video - thanks - he explains, far better than I could ever express, exactly why I selected the M550i for my needs!

However, cars nowadays all have 400 hp....and you can get cars a lot faster than the M5 for a lot cheaper (Hellcats, C7 Vette, etc.).

It's more of just being used to having the HP.
Like treywaters said, let's be honest....even the 540i is way overkill when you consider the E39 M5 was like 0-60 in 5 seconds and that was considered a super car back in the early 2000's (that wasn't that long ago). That being said, 550 horsepower is pointless without AWD. I had a CLS550 4Matic before my M6 and I swear it felt faster and it had 100 HP less. Quote:

It's ok for a lease, but I wouldn't buy it because of the lack of durability and maintainability of the V8TT engine (which also leads to a low resale value of models with this engine).

I've had the M550i for about a month now and it's my favorite BMW I've owned.
I've had: 2012 535i 2013 335i M Pkg 2013 X5 35d M Pkg 2014 535i M Pkg 2017 M4 w Comp Pkg 2018 M550i The 535i's I felt like I was constantly on the pedal, engine reving out and not having nearly enough power. Car was great size, cabin noise was good and I loved the lines of the car. The 335i was ok, almost enough power. I gave it to my wife and she loved it. The M4 was everything I was looking for power and looks wise but the road noise was way too much. I'd drive a couple hours in traffic and it was miserable. Stereo full blast just to hear it over the noise. Now, what was addictive about that car was the back road/track fun. Best "out of the box" track car ever. So now at the M550i, it's comfortable, road noise is handled, all wheel drive, tons of torque, and smooth as silk on the highway. Wishlist for the car would be a louder exhaust note in sport mode similar to M4. The M550i is not a track car but I'm mostly driving the kids or work commuting. It covers the adrenaline need every once in awhile we all seek. |
