How reliable are motors in 2018 M550?

Did BMW change to the newer motor in 2020 models because of any issues with 2018 like or was it just to make more power?

What is the consensus on how reliable these engines are ? Is this a car I should lease and turn back in or should I think it's reliable longer term? Like keep it to 100k mike sand get similar reliability to the Inline 6's?

I think the 550i motors are best leased. There are numerous threads of leakage in the N63 motor but they did revise them. It's too early to tell if the updated engines proved reliable. If yo do own one get the warranty as they seem to drink lots of oil. The 540i is a good compromise as it uses the B58 engine that is found in the Toyota Supra. BMW's inline six cylinder has been around for a very long time and is very reliable when compared to the n20 and n63 engines.

I have driven a 535i M sport (2016) I thought it was a nice car but honestly not sporty enough for me. I had a week with an M340i and loved that car. Too bad they don't crank up the boost on the 540 and give it similar power

I'm nervous to buy a BMW V8 to keep it long term but leasing they are more than I want to spend. I'd like to be in the 650-750 range. M550's probably

The N63 (V8) has gone through multiple upgrades during the (5 series) F chassis and G chassis production...partly to make development corrections...and partly for efficiency and power:
  • 2011-2013: N63B44O0 Engine (N63)
  • 2014-2016: N63B44O1 Engine (N63TU)
  • 2018-2019: N63B44O2 (N63TU2)
  • 2020-xxxx: N63B44T3 (N63TU3)

I used my M550 to 58k miles and it’s been the most reliable car I’ve ever had. I would have bought it without any warranty if I had see. The $7500 extra discount that BMW offers me to buy it after the lease before I had bought another car.

N63TU3 Technical Traning Product Information

Here is the N63TU3 engine technical training manual from the Bimmerfest forum.

The information is from July 2018, and the engine is currently used in:

2018– G14/G15/G16 M850i xDrive
2019– G11/G12 750i/750Li sDrive/xDrive
2020– G30/G31 M550i xDrive
2020– G05 X5 M50i
2020– G06 X6 M50i
2020– G07 X7 M50i

Check page 8 for the information on the Valve stem seal: "Material change. Resilience of valve stem seal increased to prevent hardening."

I was an owner of the F10 550i, and the oil leakage from the valve seals, etc. cost BMW ~$12,000 in repair work on my car after the Bang Settlement (class action lawsuit for oil leaks, etc.) was finalized.

So far, in my 2021 M550i (nearly 3K miles on the clock) - no leaks, oil or coolant (some G30 owners have previously reported coolant leaks as well).

Granted, the car is still young, but hopefully the change to the composition of the valve stem seals will correct the problem over the long term. I own the vehicle, so I looked long and hard at the engine (and had a conversation with the service advisor I've been dealing with for 5 years) before choosing to buy.

I'll be posting updates to the forum as the car hits certain mileage milestones (5K miles will be next). My thoughts after 1K miles are here: https://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1755165

I agree with f30modern the N63 engine in my opinion is best leased, no matter how many revisions it goes through, the I6 motors tend to be much more durable especially in long-term ownership/milage.

If you are looking for "more fun" an M340i may actually be your best option. I found the 540 to handle better than the 550 due to less weight over the front end.

Good luck.

If you do the regular maintenance and change your oil every 5k keep an eye on the coolant level you will be good. Engine burns oil yes it's a twin turbo engine with turbos on top. So as long as you do what you supposed to you shouldn't have any issues. Also please guys check you coolant level at both Reservoirs. This is very very important
