I heard some people code it off (mostly with B&O) as it interferes with the sound system (not sounding that good with ASD on). Otherwise it is cool. I think ASD should be activated only when in sport mode.

Don't shit on active sound until you try it.

Totally agree. I have it on my M235i and love it.

People just complain about random shit...it sounds great and if you didn't read it here you probably wouldn't know...
How could anyone not know something odd is going on when the sound of the engine is emitting from BEHIND them?

A V8 by itself does not necessarily sound amazing. Money has to be spend to make it sound right.
There are reasons outside of cost. I'm not saying I like them, but understanding the reasons for ASD extends beyond pointing the finger at the bean counters.

ASD allows the car to adjust the volume of the exhaust without the use of flappers and variable-path exhaust systems. These systems are heavy and are points of failure.

Both of these systems (ASD and variable-path exhausts) exist to resolve a conflict of consumer interests. Consumers want a car that sounds exciting, but they only want that when they're in a sporting mood. Many of the same consumers who buy BMW because of their driver focused brand image expect the car to have vault-like acoustics when they're going about their day-to-day business.

There is, of course, a segment of consumers who give zero fucks. Their line of thinking follows that the only good engine sound is a naturally aspirated V8, and it's a crime to muffle such a glorious noise...

Then there's everyone in between.

ASD is a solution to this problem. Yes, it is absolutely cost driven as well. Computer chips are cheaper than extra exhaust tubing, actuators, and the development time required to rebuild physical systems. With ASD, you can iterate the sound design 10 times an hour using nothing more than a laptop. But for many consumers, it represents the best of both worlds.

Think of it like this. When you watch a movie, you know that what you're seeing isn't real, but you choose to suspend disbelief. You do this so you can enjoy the movie. People do the same thing with ASD in their BMW. They know it's synthesized, but they like the sound, and they can literally turn the volume down if they're toting their kids around.

I don't like it, but I understand why it exists. You can always code it out and put an exhaust on the car.

Uh, the exhaust comes out the back of most cars, so that's where most of the sound (except induction noise) comes from anyway.

Sit in my car and you will understand the issue very clearly.

I've got ASD on my F36 and I love it. I don't have it on the inside of my car though so no sound coming through my speakers. I only have the outside ASD M Performance exhaust line enabled.

I know BMW says they experimented with various methods of getting sound in the cabin like putting microphones near the engine or exhaust and found that the Active Sound (i.e., recorded sounds) were best. Well, I think they need to do some more research. Other manufacturers like Porsche have figured out how to get the sound into the cabin via mechanical means. Even Ford does it. BMW needs to do the same. Recorded sound is fake sound. Sure, you can say they've recorded it from that engine but that requires a lot of trust and it is still representative of how the engine should be sounding, not how it IS sounding.

I'm more interested in the fact that it looks to be spec'd with an emergency SPARE! Is BMW finally bringing back spares???
