BMW Development Chief Has Had Enough of 3 Series Critics
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW Development Chief Has Had Enough of 3 Series Critics Negative Reviews Served as Motivation to Improve G20 3 Series Much of the negative reviews of the BMW 3 Series from recent years have not fallen on deaf ears. In fact, BMW have done more than simply take note of the complaints. According to BMW Development Chief Klaus Fröhlich, the G20 3 Series was developed to have the best driving dynamics in its class because he's tired of all the criticisms. Speaking to motoring.com.au at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, Fröhlich says: “It has to beat everybody in the segment in driving dynamics because all the Australian, UK and American journalists say ‘ooh the E46 CSL was the last real 3 Series’ ” “I do not want to hear that shit anymore.” Facing stiffer competition over the years and with each new generation, the new 3 Series needs to be extremely well-rounded in all aspects. Fröhlich notes the improvements in quality materials and dynamics, that much of the work done in the adoption of the CLAR platform has translated into improved results, including increased rigidity and weight optimization. “First thing and this is for me the most important thing; you can drive fast and completely relaxed. You don’t feel how fast you are.” “Second thing and this thing is a big achievement; this car is much more valuable, it has much better materials and it is solid like a rock.” “From the comfort it is more like a 5 Series, because this cluster architecture is so, so stiff; for example 50 per cent stiffness increase between front axle and bulkhead, 30 per cent overall stiffness [increase].” “You do not only feel it in driving, you feel it in ride comfort.” For many BMW fans, the 3 Series model range and name have an instant nostalgic connotation of a car that should be quintessentially BMW. Fröhlich acknowledges this, and notes that the 3 Series continues as an important representation of the BMW brand and the most important car in its lineup. “I think it is about what is the brand standing for,” declared Fröhlich. “I think as a company BMW has a big history of compact four-seaters with a lot of power — 1600, 2002, the first 3 Series, the 323 with two exhaust pipes. This is BMW still in the minds of many people.” “But from the heart of the brand [the 3 Series] is still the most important car. It is the right mixture of having the character and having the volume. You can have a super-sharp brand shaper very race equipped, but it will only sell some thousand units — it will not affect the brand.” “This is a multiplier and it’s sporty.” Related Topics: G20 3 Series Purposely Designed to be 'Totally Different to the 5 Series' |

I laughed out loud when I read that interview too
Just goes to show how seriously BMW wants everyone to take the G20. I think it's a good thing overall that they take the 3 Series commentaries seriously and certainly hope it lives up to these expectations.

How exactly is stiffness supposed to translate into ride comfort? lol
I think the G20 marks the end of BMW's dominance in this segment Its not the best in any one thing and the next iteration competition just gets tougher |

The G20 is adding an eDiff, a much stiffer chassis, will be noticeably lighter, supposedly has well tuned passive dampers, higher rate springs, and a steering rack with more road feel. Based on current CLAR cars, the above list of upgrades and early impressions from publications, the G20 should shape up to be a much more fun car to drive than the F30. I personally think it also looks far more refined and polished than the F30. The F30, while overall nicely styled, looks like an E90 with some nips/tucks and a new grille. Styling is subjective anyway. For a car as popular as the 3 series, you can bet a lot more effort was put into styling it than any other car in BMW's lineup. You may not like it, but I can guarantee you a lot of people will. Also, it doesn't necessarily have to be the absolute best in any one thing. If it can be right behind Alfa in driving (not saying it will be, but hypothetically...), and be behind Mercedes in interior quality, it can still be an overall great sport sedan. The Alfa has a LOT of faults that many people wouldn't be able to live with. The Mercedes is solid but isn't necessarily exciting until you move up to the C63. The real problem is the lack of a manual transmission. This is something that kept the F30 alive in enthusiast circles, IMO. If the G20 drops it, then it had better step up its game in other areas. I know for me, if the F30 didn't have a manual, I definitely would have gone a different direction. The F30 just doesn't really offer many compelling features to stand out. |

the F30 is already one of the stiffest cars on the market the F30 isn't perfect as it tries to cater to too many but nothings really changed as far as that for the G20 when you make car stiffer something has to give and if it still has runflats w/stiff sidewalls where the shocks gonna go all of the shock need to be translated somewhere and damped else you have a lot of unhappy ordinary drivers it has magic dampers supposedly which fall short of magnetic the driving aspect will become more clear as more reviews come online I am just railing on the visuals mostly the more I look at the grill the more I am putoff the bottom rear also looks a bit off imo of course |

He has to understand that the 3 series is going to have the most critics because it's one of the best but also more important cars that BMW has ever designed. when the e92 M3 came out, that car took the world by storm. There wasn't a single person in the world who would drive that car and come back hating it. I believe it's still the perfect drivers car to this day. There isn't another car that has come out that has eclipsed the statement that the M3 made when it came out. Because of it the 3 Series holds a special standard in the Auto industry. So when the new generation of 3 Series came out, everyone felt that they were underwhelming because of the precedent the E 92 M3 made. And not only the M3 of that generation, that 3-Series generation I believe in all is still BMW 3 Series production. With that being said I believe this new generation of 3 Series is a step in the right direction.

This all falls into the category of squeezing water from a rock.
The reason bmw critics and criticisms keep increasing? Because of statements just like this. This is not the first time people from bmw have talked like this. And in the past it has all been hype, which generates cynicism. More hype more cynicism. The chief culprit of all this is our own Scott here on the forum who makes grand statements, which rarely come true. The last 2 bmw m chiefs have promised more fun to drive cars and we have been left with more M logos, more wings, more vents and more pastel colors designed for a 3 year olds taste. But more fun? Hardly. If BMW wants to impress us with the 3 series. Then it's simple. Shut up and make the car dynamic again. Most of us remember the glory days vividly, so we k ow what's possible. Simply telling us it's the best car ever made does nothing for many of us. And your critics will only grow if this is yet another stupid PR excercise. Frohlich has been at BMW during the glory days so he should know what we like. Let's see if he did this right or if this is a PR stunt, if the latter.... more critics will mount.

In fairness they always save the sportiness for the ///M
I do agree with you, the base and m sport models don't really grab you the same way as it did in the past. Bumper design, headlights and tires bolster the sporty look and with BMW trying to keep the prices competitive I can start to see why the base models look so blah. Correct me if you feel different. I wonder if I'm on an island with this train or I should say "car" of thought. |

If it is as good of a quality inside as the 5, and drives best in class, Ill forgive its ulgy face and move to like it. Ill have to change the 5 in 2 years when warranty is out anyway, so if its really that good as he says, why not. G30 doesnt have to be my next car.

I wish the 3 series had stayed 2 door and made the 4 series a 4 door. I don't want a 4 door M3.
I'll stick with my E46 M3 for now.
