Well the high riding beige hearse does 15-17 mpg around town in sports individual, 17-22 in comfort & so far as much as 31mpg in eco.
Haven't been on a long run in it for a while.

FWIW, I am averaging 22mpg "around village" here in rural NY (but my house is 2 miles up a hill, and I'm sure that hurts). I get just over 30 on highway trips in comfort mode with the cc on. When I was a youngster, I could get 35 on highway trips in my 1986 Corolla, with something like 1/6 the HP. The M550 is truly magnificent.

Although i've only covered about 250 miles so far in my 550, I'm avoiding motorways to run the engine in and despite that, on one run I got 27mpg (imperial). I have no doubt with a light foot I get the low 30s on the motorway with cruise control on. We'll see once its run in.
Certainly around town , it doesn't sip fuel! |

A UK (Imperial) gallon is 20% more than a US gallon

Other than settings, have you considered proper tire inflation, vehicle load etc?

Drove down to Goodwood yesterday (as in Goodwood festival of speed) and got 31mpg (imperial) without even trying.
At a constant speed without any acceleration what so ever, the instantaneous figures are really quite incredible, ranging from mid thirties to mid forties. Any acceleration though, no matter however slight, dents this figures significantly. The more I drive it, the more I am amazed by this engine. |

another drive today.
Car was warmish, had been off for about 5 hours so still some heat in it. Route was 98% on motorways, cruise control set to 70mph , but with some stretches down to 50 or 60mph due to variable speed limits. Route is also slightly downhill Journey time 58mins, 41 miles. Average fuel consumption 37.5 mpg I seem to have bought a M550 that runs on air! That route would see me getting around 43mpg in my previous 540i So I think thats pretty good to be honest. The journey the opposite way in the morning, no motorways and more town driving, 27mpg. |

Haha I’m not seeing that kind of efficiency. But I have a heavy foot and it’s almost all in town driving. Since my last fill up, I think I was averaging under 15 mpg.

I'm half way into my 2000-mile roadtrip and I got 30.1 mpg on average (as per trip computer, so most likely subtract that by -1.5 for actual) going between 62.2-67.6 mpg on average. Plenty of 80 mph runs with variable speeds down to 50ish mph.

I’ve got a mini road trip coming up. I expect the numbers to be much better than my in town efficiency (or lack thereof).

For sure! In town absolutely kills efficiency with this engine. It's like a different machine at highway speeds though. Let us know what you get.

Here are some numbers from my recent road trip. Trip was 90% highway. Granted these numbers are from the trip computer, but as I mentioned before, IME the real world numbers are off by only 1.5-2 mpg at most. Can't believe a V8 showing a range of 510 on a tank of gas!
