Ultimate steering wheel clean tip

Well I’ve finally cracked it.

I’ve had my G30 from new and while I have always taking good care of the steering wheel, but 2 years of gel hand sanitizer use had left my now 4 year old steering wheel, shiny and slippy but sticky, despite my weekly cleaning with autoglym leather cleaner and a microfibre.

Really noticed it, after driving my wife’s 6 weeks old BMW G20.

Firstly you need a set of these pads, these are key and brilliant https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I used Zymol leather cleaner sprayed on the pad and a good scrub, the a wash off with a damp microfibre and then dry with a clean dry microfibre, then same again for a second time and left overnight to completely dry. [it will feel stick and tacky but just wait to next day]

Result is amazing, it’s completely matt and feels new, swapping between my g30 and wife’s 6 week old G20 steering wheel they feel basically the same again.

To be honest, it’s the pads that make the difference, prob get similar results with any good cleaner, a microfibre just doesn’t have enough bite to really pull the dirt out of the leather.

As I have been using the zymol for a few weeks now with a microfibre and while it was slightly better, it wasn’t anywhere as good as it feels now after adding in the pads.

I like the zymol as it has a mild conditioner included and saved me adding a separate one, as I was hesitant to add a leather conditioner to steering wheel.

While it’s only a small cleaning job, it makes such a difference as well, your steering wheel is something you touch the entire time your driving.

For those looking I found these on this side of the pond. Look the same but a different manufacturer

Any concerns/issues with dye being removed with these pads. I already have a spot or 2 where I scrubbed too hard and removed some dye.

It’s not impacted mine at all, BUT this is NOT a weekly/ monthly thing, I would do if to get it back to as new condition and just clean using a microfibre moving forward until it gets bad again in another 2/3 years time.

Nice, I love reading different techniques for cleaning the steering wheel. For me, use this:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WRS7HT6...roduct_details

with these pads:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B095KXDKHK...roduct_details

Honestly, P&S is my new favorite interior clean. Can you is on wood, leather, the screen etc. without streaks.

P&S strips the grease and grime from the steering wheel and these pads help scrub it. Once in a while I will pit Bick on the wheel after using P&S but not every time. Just don't want product buildup here.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Now all this said, a bowl of hot water with some dawn dish detergent in it will do the same thing as P&S in terms of stripping the wheel of crap.

Guys I noticed how matte and rough a new steering should feel like when I got a loaner a few months ago. Since then I accepted the fact that my steering wheel will never go back to that look. It feels clean but doesn't look matte if you know what I mean.

I've tried everything starting with damp microfiber towel/dish soap to leatherique overnight treatment and Colourlock (after I watched Pan the Organizer).

Have not used anything but a microfiber towel or a soft cleaning sponge that came with the kits.

This gives me some hope, will try this!

Try those pads I linked to, they might have enough abrasiveness to bring it back to life. Put your thumb and index finger in the pockets, wrap around the wheel and scrub in a circular motion. Of course, spray the pad with P&S first and respray as needed. Then follow up with a microfiber cloth of choice soaked in hot water to remove the detergent.

This is what mine looks like currently.

Pic was taken at night with flash so lighting could be a factor but it “looks” so shiny/oily even though I’ve cleaned it numerous times however it does not feel the way it looks if that makes sense.

I just got the star ninja scrubber you recommended. Will try it with some soap/water and leather cleaner. Fingers crossed.

Good luck! I hope my advice results in an improvement!
