DIY vs Dealer coding - what can and cant be done DIY due to dealer locked coding

Im about to join the BMW owners ranks with a 17 530i Xdrive ... and Im a very mechanically able person. Ive been told by everyone (who dont own or work on BMWs) that I wont be able to DYI maintain things like spark plugs or injectors or ... general maintenance items because of the coding needed by BMW dealers.

Is there validity to this? Can I replace most parts without coding? If this has been asked .. can someone post a good link to learn from?

Thanks for your help and I look forward to 5 series ownership.

Pure BS

You can do all sorts of maintenance without coding anything. For things that do require coding like replacing a battery, tools exist that will help you get it done.

Stick with us, you’ll be fine.
