That may be it but using your paying customers as beta testers is certainly discouraging. These are very expensive vehicles to begin with!

If you remember back in 2017 when the G30 was first released, iDrive 6 had its fair share of problems. Probably not as bad as iDrive 7, but there's a level of sophistication difference.

Nevertheless, doesn't seem BMW is overly worried about using owners as beta testers. I'm quite sure they'd rather things just work properly without all the frantic emergency software development to fix show stoppers, such as the Live Cockpit Pro going black in early G05.

I am surprised they are introducing the new instrument cluster and idrive at this moment; I would have thought such an update would be part of the LCI changes...

Adding iDrive 7 and new engine(s) the year before LCI is likely an effort to improve 5 series sales.

I have a 2017, February 2017 build and zero issues with ID6.

Mine is a May 2017 and I wasn't as lucky. After 3 iStep upgrades (last one late 2018) all was fixed.

Another one with a February 2017 iD6. No issues, but I've had my firmware upgraded to the latest version in March 2019.

Any noticeable changes in the March 2019 update?

Unfortunately I couldn't tell you. I bought the car as a used approved BMW vehicle so I only had a brief play before the update was done....

Checked for iDrive updates but even though the BMW site claimed to have a new update for me my iDrive kept claiming my version of the firmware is already the latest and greatest and therefore no upgrade is possible. Last update I did via USB bin file was about a year ago.

Anybody know if it would be possible to code stuff with something like this binmercode with idrive 7?

Wondering this since this like updates over the air etc. Its much more connected to BMW.

Would they get a note on the car profile if you change things and that might be creating problems in case for warranty or maybe a leased car etc.

Or maybe it's ok but gets overwritten by over the air updates and resets.

Anyone know something about this?

I'm picking up my 2020 530e in 2 weeks and already got stuff I want coded.

I can't make any firm comments about what will or will not work as I don't have mine yet either, but think of IDrive as a window into what the other computers in the car are doing, not the controller of what they're doing.

Coding is just changing parameters of those other computers, so it's likely that most of coding will remaining functional with IDrive 7. IDrive specific coding features may or may not remain valid to change, and I doubt anyone will know this for sure until someone tries it.

You might considering looking around for coding forums to ask this question, or see what other people have said. Bimmerfest.com has a coding forum there, I don't think there's one here (though I could very well be wrong).

You can check out the G05 or G20 forums for coding. Those models are running ID7.

Sure thing.
Of course now the question is what we can expect for the LCI update next year...
Hope they don't leave us out standing out in the cold for the LCI interior update

I don't expect any significant interior updates beside ID7. I love the interior of this car as is.

Based on the 7 series LCI, odds point to a modest interior change for the 5 LCI.

Not sure yet since we haven't heard details from 2020 owners, but it seems like the iDrive 7 implementation for 2020 might be hamstringed. Most info out there indicates no reverse assistant, no drive recorder, no remote start....So, until we know for sure, seems 2021 LCI will be a full implementation of iDrive 7 with the Driver Assistant pro camera to watch the drivers eyes, revised ACC with a bit more autonomous driving capability (like X5), digital key, etc.. Obviously speculation on my part....

One thing I sure hope they do is rework the wireless tray so a Galaxy S9/10+ phone fits in the tray properly. It does fit in a G20 3 series so my bet is an enlarged tray is coming to the 5 LCI.

I have a 2018 540ix that is being reapired (a long story in and of itself).

I was given a 2020 330ix is ID7! I am so confused by ID7, the entire ergonomics have changed and, in my view, NOT for the better. Very very confusing!

When my lease is up in 9 months I may move to another brand after years of BMW because the ergonomics are truly awful!

Wait until you check the other brands. I find most make iDrive 7 look not so bad after all.

I work for enterprise part time moving cars and believe me, BMW is not the worst. Nissan is horrible along with other Japanese cars. American cars are not much better.
