Gesture Control After Recall
Kind of new to these forums so I'm not sure if it's already been brought up or answered, but the other day I took in my '19 530i for the recall notice that was sent to me for the backup camera. They performed the software update but I noticed while driving home that my gesture control was not responding as it normally did beforehand. I have to rotate my finger at a certain angle for it to recognize the gesture and even then the volume only goes up or down at a very slow rate. Changing the songs was a problem too as at one point it wouldn't even register the gesture control. Has anyone else had this issue? If so is there a way to reset the iDrive system myself or should I take the car back to service?
Thanks! |

I had my car updated 2 weeks ago. Mine works OK. Have you tried toggling off/on gesture control?
If that doesn't work you can reboot iDrive but I doubt it will help much since it reboots on start after car is off for 20+ minutes. Hold down mute button for 20 seconds to reboot. Tell us what firmware version is on your iDrive. Use iDrive controller: Click Map Options Navigation settings Position and software version Software version Near bottom you'll see NBTevo_X (where X is the firmware version). Mine has S.

Gesture control is IMHO a useless function and you are better off without it. You can change the volume with a button on your steering wheel and you can change stations the same way if the stations are on your preset list. It is also remarkably easy to reach over and change the volume by touch with the volume knob without ever taking your eyes off the road.

after the recall update, my gesture control went nuts as I was driving home (reacting to non-gestures, and not reacting to intentional gestures), almost went back to the dealer.
Next day, gesture control was working normally. might be related to what you are seeing? |

I'd stick 2 fingers up at it - although that would probably end up starting a phone call!
I also think it's a gimmick but it's your car and if it's not working as it did before then take it up with the dealer who if they cannot solve should be able to log a call with bmw technical to solve. |

Mine works fine despite being a useless feature for me. It's a lot easier to turn up the volume knob than it is to try and wave your finger in the air.

I really like gesture control. I use for the two finger mute and the finger point for phone calls. It is very useful and easy to use. I wish BMW would just make it standard equipment across the board.

Just had backup camera recall done on my 2020 m340. I use gesture control primarily for the “go home” nav and for the “mute”.
After recall performed, gesture control no longer worked. I tried enabling and disabling gesture control and reconfiguring the custom gestures. No go. Still searching for a solution. Last edited by crawfoj; 05-01-2020 at 11:56 PM.. Reason: Correct model year |

I ran into this same problem on a 2017 540xi after a full software (i-level) update. It took about 2 weeks for my gesture control to return to normal but it did in fact become OK.
Give it some time. If you are impatient I would try a battery reset (don't forget there are 2 batteries) and see where it goes. Chris
