Good morning bimmer family
I'm trading in my 2018 540i for a 2018 m550i and I have two questions. 1) I tuned my 540i with stage 1 using mhd and it was amazing improvement to performance. I'm looking to tune the m550i but I've heard good things about bootmod so curious to know if anyone has been able to compare mhd vs bm3, in particular for the N63TU2 2) I'm looking for a local shop in Connecticut that can work on bmw vehicles. I've been to a few mom and pop shops in the area and they usually are very nervous to work on bimmers. I noticed this with my X5 years ago. The shops would recommend I go to the dealer. I started working on my cars on my own but I'm not the most handy. I did simple things like brake work, oil change, etc. I used to work on my 540i as well but I'm not taking any chances with the N63. If anyone is in the Hartford County area and can recommend a local shop, that would be great! Thanks in advance for your help 😁 PS: I attached a picture of the 540i going out. Will post pics of the m550i once I get it 😁 |

Don’t be scared about the N63TU2. They made major improvements compared to the N63TU. Although it is not as bulletproof in terms of reliability as the N63TU3, I’d say it’s still generally reliable. So reliable that I was willing and able to get an 2018 M550i and 2016 750i. 750i has 67k miles and M550i is at 45k miles… knock on wood

Anyway, I’m happy with my decision but curious how much different the engine performs in the larger 7 series. That’s a beautiful car, by the way. I much prefer your exterior to the new 7.

So...
I received the car Monday, and this morning (Tuesday) on my way to work I was cruising between 90-100 on the hwy and the car felt great. When I exited and stopped at a red light I could smell coolant and puffs of white smoke. 😭 Opened up the hood and found leaky coolant all over the alternator and turbos. Seems like this is a known issue. I have a third party warranty so I called them immediately and they said take it in. Just got the call from BMW that the coolant lines need to be replaced... Surprise surprise... I got a 540 for a loaner, wouldn't leave my car without a loaner, need to get to work. My warranty is paying for it to be replaced, so I'm getting what sounds like brand new coolant lines and hoses and clamps. I have the option to return the car, but all of my car friends are encouraging me to keep the car and just let them replace the coolant lines. They say once that gets replaced the rest of the N63TU2 is pretty reliable.... Thoughts? |

I agree with the others. If you like the car, let them replace the lines. You’re getting a known issue covered by warranty and you won’t have to worry about it going forward. I’d make sure they use the new improved lines and not go back with the old rubber lines.
