Ballpark brake $$ 540i

Good afternoon,
Took my 2017 540i to a local mechanic, not BMW,because it was shaking when I braked around 50 MPH. They called and said need new rotors front and back and new pads front and back. 6 mm left on front and 4 mm left on the back.

With brake fluid change as well, the quoted me $3400....does that seem high to you guys? What do you think BMW would charge if I went to them for this service?

It DOES NOT have the M brake package. tiy from a newbie

definitely sounds high....I would expect 2k for that job...not 3400...check their labor rate...if it's not a bmw dealership labor charge should be too high

Seems expensive given the scope of work. Where you live rust is not a problem, so a good mechanic could quickly do pads and rotors on all corners and bleed the fluid at the same time. Also, do you know the brand of pads and rotors that will be used? I would think that a dealer would not charge much more and you'd be assured of getting BMW parts in the process.

Just a tip if you should not use a dealer: ask that the new pads be ceramic (vice semi-metallic). They create less dust and are much kinder to rotors (the expensive part of a brake job).

Fronts should be around $1200, rears $1000 or so from dealer. I say go dealer route.OEM parts have a 2 year parts/labor warranty. Good insurance in case you need it. Ask me how I know😀

This was a very high quote. Run away from this shop. I am sick of companies ripping people off. Shameful.

On bmw website search for value service packages. You select the dealer with your VIN and it gives you the offer that dealer has for that service. You can compare ones. They think noone knows about them so they go as high as they can.
Mine wanted $2800CAD to do it.
I end up buying everything from them with a discount (I know a guy &#128513 for $1250 and did it myself which took me quite a bit!
I didn’t do the oil as I flushed it last year.
Check a few dealers and see if yours would match them to avoid driving far.

I did my brake service myself, changed front and rear pads and rotors, sensors, and did a brake fluid flush.

I think on just parts alone it was around $1300 IIRC. Take into account labor and that should give you a ballpark number to work with. It took me an afternoon to do everything, but I'm not a pro mechanic and I don't have a lift. Also, this is for MSport brakes and I upgraded my rears to bigger rotors.

For that price you might as well go to a dealer, you will probably pay less and also get a loaner.
That being said, G30 doesn't seem to have much aftermarket options for rotors and pads. Parts will cost you $1300 ish like 540iSUP said, you could save on rotors by using zimmerman single piece rotor instead of OEM ones with an aluminum head, each rotor will be about 3 lbs heavier but you probably won't tell anyway. The save on each rotor by going single piece is about $130, so $130 * 4 = $520 ish savings on parts can be had.
Labor would be about $500 here in Seattle area, not sure about Austin. So $1400 ish total should be a reasonable price if you use single piece rotors, or $2000 ish for two piece rotors.

Although my vehicle did not require a brake job at the time, I went with EBC Redstuff pads for less brake dust, a set of single piece (German-made) symmetrical-curve slotted rotors (kinda like bi-directional slot design) from Brakenetic, and a pair of OEM brake wear sensors (front /rear). The installation of these aftermarket brake parts were completed at an authorized dealership along with brake fluid flush service which costed under $1600.00 (parts/labor).

I have to agree with PetieD 7 EBC Redstuff pads are so much easier on the wheels. I still get brake dust, but not nearly as much as the OEM pads.

Gents,

I´d like to hear your experience - how would you compare the OEM stock brake rotors and pads to the aftermarket that you have experience with? When you replaced stock brakes for the aftermarket parts, what was the performance of the new brakes compared to the originals?

Get more quotes from different shops and then take those quotes to bmw and they should match it. My local
Bmw will match it, or get as close as possible

I paid $1126.49 for OEM front pads, rotors and the sensor last month. I was quoted $1020.27 for OEM rear pads, rotors and the sensor which I’ll probably have to replace in a few months. This is from a reputable indy shop in LA with tax included for a ‘19 540. Dealer quoted about $4k total for front and rear which was ridiculous. I could have saved a few hundred more if I drove over an hour to another shop with lower labor rates and tax but it wasn’t convenient at all. I hope this helps, find another shop.
