Help! Does this sound normal?

We just bought a 2017 540i with only 17,000 kms. After driving it with the windows down, I have noticed a slight rattling sound as I press the throttle (cabin is very quite when windows are closed). Upon my own inspection under the hood, the sound seems very prominent. It seems to come from somewhere in the middle of the valve cover area. The car is still under warranty. Just wondering if we should take it to the dealership to have it checked, and what seems to be causing this. Or does it all sound normal for the B58 injectors?

We are coming from a 2008 BMW 535xi (n54). It didn’t seem to be as noticeable in this car.

I have this same sound coming from my engine. I think it's normal for the engine and nothing to be worried about. I also jus recently had my spark plugs changed and the clicking is the same, so I would like to believe it's nothing to worry yourself over

I hope so too. It sure sounds the same. Just not something I would expect from a premium german saloon.

It could be that you are hearing the sounds of high pressure fuel injectors. Most direct injection engines seems to have some audible clicking sounds from the injectors at idle. --Bob

Definitely sounds like injectors to me. They do sound a bit noisy.

Have you thought of running a tank of fuel with an approved additive/cleaner in it? I've used the BMW fuel additive in my N55, when the injectors started getting a bit 'ticky', and they did quieten down.

I didn't hear anything to worry about - agree with others that it sounds like injectors. I've not noticed mine sound different with better quality fuel - although I *think* its a bit smoother (I may well have fallen for the marketing hype though, haha!)

No but I’ll be sure to check that out and see if that helps, thanks.

That’s fair. As long as I am not alone and this clicking doesn’t harm the engine in any way in the long run.

Do you know if these high pressure fuel injectors are similar to those in the n54? If not, are these for the enhanced power output of the b58 or for better fuel efficiency?

Cheers!

I haven’t tried using 94 octane yet since I just got the car this month. It’s just that I know I will have a hard time going back down to 91 afterwards, if I too fall for the hype! That being said, if I notice any change with the sound, I’d be more than glad to stick with it.

Cheers!
