Hi all - I'm thinking of pushing the boat out and get something large petrol engined for a few years until the time will come to have to buy an electric car.
What are owners impressions of the M550i as a daily driver? I will have a once a week commute of 120 miles, otherwise will just be used locally - will be covering maybe 9/10k miles per year. It will be a brand new factory ordered car. What economy is achievable on a run? Is 30mpg (UK) out of the question? If owners can let me know what you're getting that would be great. Performance - I was lucky enough to have an M5 Competition for a week as a loan car. With the M550i having the same torque, but down on power, will it still feel as savage in a straight line? Loads of reviews on YouTube suggest the straight line performance is very similar. Thanks in advance. |

Economy: i'm doing 8,5l/100km on highway which works out as 33mpg UK i think (but not 100% sure!), in eco pro mode. However short urban trips with a lot of stop and go i get 17-18l/100km.
Straight line: m5 will certainly be a bit quicker but i would think the real difference is with curves and bends, where the m5 will shine. Hope this helps!

@ KoenG we only got this vehicle in right hand drive as the LCI. @OP 30MPG is possible with some eco pro cruse control activity. Driving 'normally' you wont miss anything the M5 offers. Pitching it into fast changes of direction and revving it out at full throttle, the M5 is going to be noticeably more stable / quicker.

I've never had the pleasure of driving an M5, but have had my CPO M550i (2018 model year) for about nine months. My commute is about 70 miles round trip when I'm not working from home. Driving at 65-75mph on the highway with the cruise control on in comfort mode most of the way, I'm averaging about 23mpg (US) with mostly stop and go driving making that number what it is. The M550i is a beautiful daily driver with plenty enough power and "savagery" to land you in jail any time you want to press your luck, hence the cruise control on the highway. I've seen 150mph in this car and it comes with no drama at all. It's by far the best sedan I've ever driven, and I'm looking forward to making a road trip to visit my daughter this year.

But with this low milage, isn't it more interesting to get a CPO M5 instead then? You'll have definitely more performance than the M550i and all the comfort of one. I'am not saying the M550i is lacking power (it's also a super machine), but when you consider the possibility to drive the alpha-car for years to come? At least when I drove the M5 pre-LCI a couple of years back, it was perfectly honed to be an incredible comfortable daily driver while it has the ability to go freakingly fast, everywhere, also down serpentines! |

The M550i has a much softer ride than the M5/Comp and you will find yourself enjoying the soft ride, and ruthless power when necessary!
