Set up my phone to unlock the car

I can't remember what BMW calls it, but you can set up your smart phone to unlock and start the car, just like the plastic card does, using NFT.

The problem is, I have a Samsung Flip 4 phone, which when open, does not fit in the tray. Now I can fold it closed and it will fit, will use the inductive charging, etc. but when I'm doing the configuration for the car to recognize it, when I close it, it pauses the app. So setup cannot finish.

I don't know how to get around this. Any ideas?

And don't suggest that I get a new phone. This one is pretty new, and I mostly like it.

I’m half idiot so maybe I’m not understanding your problem. Have you tried putting the top half of the phone in while its open? You don’t need to lay it completely in there for the digital key to work per my iPhone 13 that i use on a daily basis.

And I will still suggest you get a new phone, unless you’re ok with mediocrity.

AH... I kind of assumed that it had to be in contact with the pad in order to work, I'll try that.

Oh, and give yourself some credit, you're not half.

Thanks for the suggestion.

If it works will you at least consider changing phones?

The phone has to be in complete contact with the pad to synch...ergo, the flip phone might be problematic. Possible back door coding but I wouldn't know where to begin. Best of luck!

Thanks. I meant to update the thread once I discovered that the NFT chip is near the bottom of the phone, so I was actually able to stuff it (the phone) in the tray backwards and got it to work. I thought it required complete contact as well, but apparently it will work within a 1/2 inch or so. That would be 1.7 mm for our metric friends.

It occurred to me last weekend that I do occasionally leave my phone in the car which is now probably not such a good idea. Although honestly, except for a joy ride potential, the typical thief would probably prefer the phone to the car, for a quick flip.

No such worry in the M4, which for some reason is not equipped with the NFT technology and also contains the anti-Millennial theft device (a clutch).
