Is This Normal?
2020 M550i
Sometimes when I exit the car after I have shutdown the engine, the electronics remain in the ready state, meaning the sound system is on, instrument cluster on and so on. Eventually, the system will time-out and everything will shutdown. I can force a shutdown by pushing the volume/mute button for 10 s. Is this normal? |

The system will also stay on if you open the door too quickly after shutting down the engine. I've trained myself to wait a couple of seconds before opening the door.

My owners manual lists 3 different ways to have the vehicle enter IDLE STATE. And as others mentioned, depending on your exiting procedure…if you open the door too fast or unbuckle your seat belt too fast…the vehicle may not shut down. Being in my mid 60s…sometimes my prostate has me having to pee right away as soon as I pull into the garage…and if I open the door to jump out before pressing the START button to turn the engine off… the radio may still be playing even though I have iDrive set to shut down when I open the door. When this happens it’s no biggy to me because I know I exited the vehicle unconventionally by opening the door prior to turning the engine off or unbuckling my seat belt early…I just lock the door with the remote or CA door handles…then quickly UNLOCK them again (since I’m in the garage). This turns the radio off (when I lock the vehicle)…but will put the vehicle back into the READY STATE when I unlock the vehicle…but then it will shut down again if I don’t come back to the vehicle in a few minutes.
But again, if you check your owners manual (or the manual built into iDrive) it will list the multiple ways you can enter the idle state. My f06 & f15 can enter idle state by:
Some BMWs require pressing the VOL button vs the START button…so again, check your owners manual for your particular BMW model. The images below were from a G chassis BMW (I forget which one)…but the images are in my pic stash:

You can also power off by holding the volume knob in for a few seconds if it happens.
On another thread it was mentioned that the vehicle drains the battery less if the car is locked, which I found to be true (using BimmerLink). So I lock every time including in the garage. |

Shut the engine down BEFORE you unbuckle. Then unbuckle and when you open your door, the electronics will shut down.

Here's a wrinkle... got home from Panda, let wife unit out in the driveway, backed into garage, unbuckled, turned off car and opened door. When I opened the door the electronics shut down. I deliberately delayed a bit between the steps.

For better or worse, recent vehicle models stay active longer and start to load sooner in order to minimize boot time.
Sequence of exiting the car matters and any physical car contact (ie brake pedal, door handle, seat sensor, etc) along along with active phone calls or Carplay/Android Auto can trigger wake signals. Pay attention to whether there is a passenger as well as order you turn off engine, unbuckle seat belt, and open door to find ideal exit strategy for desired behavior. |
