check engine light came on today

First post here, and hello to your all, ready for Xmas yet?
My car is 2018 us version(Canada) 540i m sport, had the car since June 2018, Love the car, but today check engine light came on, just in time for xmas, but there's no error message in idrive at all. check the code using bimmerlink, it says: active cooling damper control (akks), blockage at all ambient temperature, blockage warm ambient temperature in initial and learning phase.

Call my dealer and book the appointment after xmas. But should I be worried? anyone have same issue?

Thank you very much

I wonder if this relates to the grill shutters? If so, then if you are driving long distances then the engine might not get the right cooling so I'd be careful... I may be way off the mark with this, but that would be my guess given the code...

Mine came on about a week and a half ago for the same issue. Taking it to the dealer today to get fixed - had it in Tuesday for diagnosis, but could leave the car overnight for a fix.

Can't say how much of an issue it will cause. I know my upper shutters were working fine before the diagnosis visit, but after it seems they disabled them and left them open. Haven't looked at the lower shutters to see how they were set.

I thought grill shutter was suppose to open when it gets hot anyway

They are supposed to but if there was a fault they might not potentially, that would be easy to check though

May not be related, but check your gas cap to make sure you turned it to the click during last gas fill.

I think the important thing, which you did, was to report it to the dealership and make an appointment. If continued driving could cause a problem, you should be protected under the warranty as the dealership would/should have told you to stop driving if that was necessary.

I bet your automatic front grille shutters are stuck in the open position. That can trigger a check engine light. Only solution is to replace the shutters under warranty.

That bet is a winner. Dealer had to replace (under warranty) the lower air flaps on wife's 2017 540i after the check engine light came on.

I found it interesting that the tech's write-up said that neither the upper nor the lower flaps moved, but only the lower flaps needed to be replaced in order for both flaps to move.

If anyone cares to know, the PN is 51-13-7-497-285.

And on the plus side, the shutters aren't all that expensive. On the down side, it appears that they need to remove the front bumper cover to replace either set, so that means labor costs are not going to be cheap when this happens out of warranty. :-(

The replacement shutters have a new part number, so hopefully they will be more reliable than the factory part.

When I first found out about these "shutters," I was thinking that this is a classic example of over-engineering something. It's just another thing that could go wrong.

I am still moving forward with my order, so it's not a deal breaker, but I do think it's excessive, and unnecessary.

My 2 cents.

This again!?

Had my fancy over-engineered electric shutters replaced under warranty last year (one year into my lease) and they decided to stop working again today. Check engine light is on and they do shut but only 15-20 minutes after the car is off. I wish they could be manually set to open, the only time they are relevant is to preserve engine heat when the car is turned off in cold weather (and I park in the garage year-round). I’ll be making an appointment... Again.

I´ve had my new (to me) MY19 G31 for four days now, and the Check Engine light came on this morning. I assume it´s the shutters. My dealer is busy due to holiday season, so it´s booked in in CW35...

Not that it seems like anyone cares at all, but it was a faulty NOx sensor, which was replaced under warranty. Car got a full softwareupdate as well; not that I can see any difference.

Check Engine light went out Friday, but there must have been some codes stored anyway.
