A few days ago, I was in a rush to get to a meeting while I had the low fuel warning on. Eventually, when I refilled the car, it took in 68.7ltrs although the tank is supposedly 67ltrs. I know fuels tanks, in general, are bigger than what manufacturers declare them to be. But this got me wondering what's the actual size is.

Anyone with similar experience?

Perhaps that's because he drives a 530e?

Whatever capacity your tank is, don't forget the path from the tank to the filler inlet also holds gas if you really try to cram a bunch in.

I would have never guessed that. Next time I'm in a similar situation, I can stay relaxed 😁

BMW data lists approx. 68 litres for gasoline, (66 litres diesel). It is not advised to squeeze in the maximum fuel possible.

BMW state:

The fuel tank is full when the filler nozzle clicks off the first time.
Also, as safety information, give the notice:

Overfilling of the fuel tank can damage the fuel system.

And additionally is a waste of money in the US at least. As the fuel nozzle is required to reclaim any gasoline pumped but unable to fit in the tank. But you will be billed for this reclaimed gasoline.

On any fuel tank. It will have a safe capacity amount. The figure quoted will be the safe capacity amount, which will always be less than the tanks true capacity for obvious reason, ie Fuel expansion.

This is for all you penny pinchers out there

Don't forget there is serious weight in 70 litres, or 12-13 gallons of fuel. So if you fill your tank to the filler cap you actually use a lot of fuel moving that fuel (weight) from A to B. If you can, you will be better off filling your tank with small amounts of fuel on a regular basis. Of course on long journeys this is not entirely feasible but if your driving in a city with plenty of fuel stations around and you get into the mindset, then over a year you should save some serious $$$'s or €€€'s.

Still bugs me weight/ weight distribution or not why BMW can't put 20+ gallon tanks in these cars (like Audi/MB) to increase range by 10%....they do it for the M5, so one would think the 5er could get the bigger tank.

The most I have put in was 17.4 gallons and it was showing a range of about 20 miles left, so I'm guessing there was still about 1 gallon left in the tank.

I guess the figure you saw was the tank plus the pipe from the tank to the filler cap

Serious weight? Have you done the math? On a 4,000 lb car you think 30-40 lbs of fuel really makes a difference? I personally have lost 30 lbs in the past two years and have seen no difference in my mileage.
