G31 howling noise over 20mph
I've noticed a noise when the car goes over 20mph and the dealer doesn't know why. Wheel bearing have been replaced in both front wheels but still the noise exists. Anyone else had this problem. My case is now with bmw Germany awaiting a fix

Are the brakes disengaging fully ? Door seals ? Turbo charger checked ok? Oil and water pumps ?

Every possible check has been done according to the dealership. But only time will tell if BMW Germany come back with a solution. It's so annoying when the car is so beautifully designed!

I ended up getting a puncture so switched two of them from PZeros to Bridgestone Potenzas and problem solved! The relief was immense! Is the noise your experiencing speed or revs related? Or is it constant? Last edited by Wardy82; 03-13-2018 at 01:58 PM.. |

Another common cause is the top of the windshield. If a molding is loose or if it was replaced due to a crack or accident, it can howl at speed. But I'd think it would be far worse at highway speeds than 20 mph.
Oh, also, I had an interesting issue with my X4. My guess is a rock got caught in the rotor backing plate. I'd get a high pitched squeal at parking lot speeds. Then it became a squeak while braking. But never sounded like pad squeak. The dealer re-seated and lubed the pad backing anyways. Not fixed. Then days later it got real loud and occurred at highway speeds. I was about to set another appointment when "clunk" and it was gone for good.

It is a late reply, but the same phenomenon happened, so I will report it.
The same abnormal noise occurred at G31 540iXdrive. The exchange of the hub bearing and the replacement of the tire did not have good results. It could not be handled by a dealer, and when investigated by a BMW-JAPAN engineer, the cause was judged to be vibration of the ceiling board. Several similar complaints occurred in Japan. The vibration of the tire resonated with the car body, the panel of the ceiling part of the car body vibrated and sounded. The technician judged that it could be solved by removing the interior of the ceiling and reinforcing the ceiling panel, and started work. The results will be reported later. |

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have the same resonance noise on a 2021 G31 540i on 19" non-runflats and I wondered whether anyone got a successful resolution?
It's my fifth new 5 series since 1996 and all the others have been practically silent (all M Sport, some with runflats some not). This is the highest spec car but the noisiest car by far of any that I have ever owned. I would also describe it as a resonance (like a low frequency booming/droning noise), triggered by different road surfaces, but defnitely not road noise. Did anyone achieve a satisfactory resolution?
