Exhaust 540i - DP
Hello all,
How to make the 540i sound loud with crackles and burbles but not too loud?? Down pipe should make a difference?? And maybe stage 1 bootmod3 with burble settings? I'm coming from 435i And I know the down pipe by it self will make the 440i and 435i sound much better than stock and it's very nice to me. Also, Anybody has installed the Cold Air intake? Will the turbo sound better? I had M performance exhaust and Intake on my 435i. I loved it!! Thanks all. Zeyad |

On my current 2017 540i I have a Remus catback with Catless downpipe and reso delete, it's much lounder in sprot+ when the flap is open compared to my older n55 but absolutely love it, as far as burbles/pops go, i've only set them to 0.3 for aggression and time on bm3 stage 2 OTS tune, they pop on downshift or when you let off gas for quick bit and that's enough for me so it's more of a personal preference tbh

Do you miss anything from the 335i? I'm still thinking a smaller car will be more fun to drive |

Only thing I miss is the weight, 5er is heavier but after the tune, it's way faster than my custom tune stage 2 335i even though g30 is heavier. I was so done with the f30 interior so I wanted something completely different and have no complaints, I got wider tires on it 265/295 so shit ton grip

We are all located in CA. I think with just a cat back and OEM tune you will be fine. It will be a little bit more aggressive, but the police won't stop you especially if the flap is closed.

I'm in TN and it is crazy to me that a police officer would take the time to stop someone for that. I get the laws and everything, just shocked the cops actually care enough to pull someone over.

I got a 540 with catless downpipe and stock exhaust.
I just deleted the stock resonator yesterday, inside the car you cant really tell a difference, but outside, it sounds a bit louder. Id try this first to see if you want to go louder or not. |

Watching this thread for a similar reason. I don't live in California, I just maybe happen to be the one guy that's not a fan of pops and bangs. I love the roar of a good exhaust system but hate the gurgling stuff. I'm hoping to find a recipe for mods that can give me what I want. I'm thinking catted DP, bootmod, and axle back Remus, but it would be great to hear one in person first.

Guys, the OEM BMW tune is what causes the burbles, not the actual exhaust. If you get BM3 or any of the other ECU flash tunes, there are settings to adjust burble aggressiveness, length of time, and you can even completely disable it for a more refined ride.
The catalytic converter, resonator, and muffler work in conjunction to reduce the noise that you hear. So getting rid of any of those items will increase sound. The rear muffler reduces the majority of the noise. The resonator helps with the droning sound. Removing the catalytic converter will create a hollow sound. Remove all 3 and you're basically a race car. With the resonator and muffler removed, you will have a deep growl, it will be loud, but the catalytic converter will absorb some of that sound and you don't have to worry about accidentally shooting flames if you're not tuned. With just a DP and OEM exhaust, it will be only marginally louder, but if you have burbles they will be more audible. If you removed your resonator from there you might get a slight drone at certain RPMs, exhaust will be louder, and burbles more pronounced. If you get an aftermarket muffler after that, it will increase the sound. This is why a good, quality, aftermarket muffler with R&D is expensive. They do the testing to create the best sound possible with the best flow, utilizing high grade SS or Titanium. If you go cheap with any of these components (i.e. parts using thinner material), you will get a nasty sound as the frequencies produced by the exhaust reflects on the metal and creates a rattly, kind of fart canny, sound. (sometimes titanium can have that noise as well, but it's not as obnoxious and sounds more refined) Moral of story: A tune will get rid of burbles, get good parts, choose a DP with a high flow cat to reduce noise and smell... or go straight pipe and hoon all over town like you're 18. *Also wanted to mention that you need to hear the exhaust in person. No amount of youtube vids are going to help you here.* |

my work mate did put it on I6
a good muffler shop can do it for you, a little pipe modification is required, like a size transition it will sound good. not too loud but with some burps and pops |
