Carbahn Tune Installed HOLY SH*%
Had the Carbahn tune done by BMW of Southpoint in Durham, NC last week while I was out of town. Picked the car up and my god, it is an absolute monster now. My 2018 M550i has been transformed into the beast that has always lurked beneath the surface, I highly recommend this mod if you've been thinking about it.

Yup. They are an authorized Carbahn reseller/installer. Having previously owned an F10 M5, I thought that the M550i was pretty close to that car in terms of acceleration, especially with AWD. But now? The car would almost certainly be right there with a stock F90 M5.

I suspect those HP/Torque numbers are at the crank and not to the wheel. Going from 456 HP to 698 HP is quite a jump ! Last edited by HerkHealer; 01-03-2022 at 06:18 PM.. |

Did you get the matching warranty for $1250? How much did your dealer charge for the flash?

HP goes to 698, Torque to 702. These are the specs quoted by Carbahn on 93 octane
Jesus, that's quite the jump. Did you buy the tune with the warranty or without? Not sure I'd have the balls to push our engines this hard.

This is pretty wild if these numbers are real. Would like to see either draggy or a dyno run from an actual M550i owner. Too bad I just decided to buy an extended warranty.
https://carbahnautoworks.com/product...ne-model-n63b/ The numbers are at the flywheel. 15-20% of drivetrain loss could be more like in the mid 500hp range and low 600ftlb area. More like 100hp and a little more than 100ftlb than stock.

Hmmmm........I just read up on this tune and it seems to work on select 2020 models too.
My 2020 ECU is unlocked ( i believe ) because it was built in June 2019 and supposedly BMW started locking the ECU's down in early 2020. I wonder if they have a specific / different tune for the 2020's ? My car has the bigger turbo's and other things that the 2018/19's do not. To include more HP and Torque. Guess i need to email them. P.S. -- it would be sneaky of them to post the HP/Torque numbers using a 2020. Since there is about a 70HP/70TQ difference between the 18/19's and 2020's and up. So your dealer did the install for you… what, if anything, did they say about your warranty? Do you still have some of the factory warranty left?
I have a CPO warranty and have held off on a tune b/c of my concern that my warranty / CPO will be voided (at least as to the engine)…. If the dealer is an authorized installer, maybe they "look the other way" if you have a motor issue? Does the car pop/crackle more or just faster?

Dinan recently stopped offering this on the new X product line but they still grandfather it for the prior tunes already sold. The new X tune is dirt cheap because of the lack of warranty. Carbahn offers their tune for $1200 with no warranty or the same tune with warranty for $2400. I have a problem with this. You either stand by it or you don't. My guess is that if you buy through a dealer and you are under factory warranty, they strongly advise or make you pay 2X. I'm really curious what route the OP went. Carbahn is owned by Steve Dinan BTW.

iirc, the Carbahn warranty is essentially a standalone powertrain warranty. CPO would cover all the usual stuff except powertrain. It's probably written in gory detail on the Carbahn site.

That said I'm not worried. Both tunes are on the lighter side compared to BM3 or custom ECU tunes that there is almost zero chance either of these are going to cause a failure. I also don't beat the shit out of the car or track it. I've never launched. I just like the added juice. It's noticeable, but nothing like changing maps and hunting down high octane gas. If I could do it all over again, I would have put less emphasis on warranty and got the X product for $1,500 less than the V2 as the numbers are the same. That said, Dinan didn't offer the V2 in May when I did it. So I have a $1500 warranty, like paying double for Carbahn. EDIT: I should add that I have been to the dealer several times and they had no issue or comments on the tune.

I don't know the answer to that for sure, but I doubt it. I think you need one of the aggressive ECU flashes to remedy that. This is still a piggy back. I would just shoot a message to Dinan. They are great on getting back to people with comprehensive answers. If you ask, please post back the answer. I am curious as well.
