Lightbulb Why are the rings gone from around the gauges?

Is there any information why the rings are missing on the display from G30 MY2019 / July 2018?

BMW's better display thankfully forgoes the ugly plastic-on-lcd look of the first-gen active cluster.

I prefer the look of the rings. But they does make it very difficult to wipe the screen, in the corners, without smearing.

Possibly so it can in the future display the new gauges as seen on the 8 series and the new g20 without any further hardware changes

Mine is a June build, and still has the rings.

Would have preferred the cleaner look.

But the ringless display in the 2019 G30 is not any different to the ring'ed display of the full LCD that was optional in 2018, other than the fact that its ringless.

Part number changes and my guess is that the client will have the same part but display the new style of dissolution like the 8 and forthcoming 3 series.

The new G30's without the rings appear to have the exact same display and resolution as the 'older' G30's.

Call me cynical, but the fact they have removed the rings at the same time that the world is seeing the fancy new 8 series cluster makes me think BMW are trying to make buyers think that they have updated the G30 cluster when in fact they just took the rings off.

This is the euro spec digital dash. I don't understand why we didn't get it here as of MY2017.

In germany, all 5 series and 6 serie gt have been delivered without rings since July 2018 / MY2019. there is no press release about it from bmw.

It was a quiet update.

maybe I am bias, but I actually like the rings and the true 3-D effect they give, plus I only look at the dash when the car is active

Really difficult to satisfy humans. I clearly remember the moaning about the ring when G30 first came out when people were comparing to Audi digital display without ring. Now some want it retained.

Isn't this a good thing, makes me think that BMW will upgrade the infotainment system to version 7 easier without the rings.

Who cares? Rings or no rings you still don't get a full cockpit display in front of you.

I highly doubt that. I am guessing it takes a little more than just getting rid of the ring for the upgrade to the latest revision (e.g. faster display processing to render maps, perhaps higher resolution display?, etc.).

I guess if it comes, it would be a pleasant surprise for MY2019+ owners.

Looks like the MY19 M5 Competition still has the rings around the gauges.

So they removed the rings, to give them solely to M5 buyers as some sort of 'exclusive' feature.

Really BMW? Are times that hard?
