I think the rings just reviewed poorly, gets commented on a lot by critics. Also rather out of sync with the way the rest of the market is headed, including other BMW vehicles, so they were bound to get cut. Looks better without IMHO. As for the M5, it always lags behind the G30 changes right?

Just cos the world is going that way, doesn't mean it's the right thing

All the car manufacturers are getting lazy by simply slapping large screens in cars without much attention to ergonomics. At least BMW has resisted that by not having one long screen as in the Mercedes E.

Yeah I know what you mean and I sort of agree, although I think the rings looked a little bit weird when the screen is powered down. I guess my big question with all these screen-heavy cockpits now is how they will feel in years to come... usually the gadgets in a car are the thing that ages it the most in my view.

Even the iDrive system, which is nice enough to use, is always a bit laggy and clunky compared to say, a £300 iPad or whatever. Imagine trying to drive one of these things in ten years time!

It could be worse, Tesla drivers can't even open the glove box without using the screen

Well most of us (current owners) won't own the car in the 10 years - we'll own something more current. And those buying 10 year old cars (which was me not too long ago) have already come to terms with the fact that the systems in those cars are 10 years old. It's just one of those things buyers will deal with when they're getting a car for 1/5 of the price it was when new.

The fact that they've removed the rings, but the panel does nothing different, seems to contradict your point. It's proven that the rings are not the reason for the limitations, BMW is.

If the panel is going to remain as it was, may as well leave the 'nice accent' in place IMO.

BMW are renowned for their evolutionary approach to car design and this includes the interior. It's easier to see the direction of travel in retrospect. Look at the outer rings they are not pure semi circles. Now look at the new id 7. Guess what? the outer dials, and indeed the inner ones are almost rhomboid. Now check out the new Z4. Guess what? The idrive screen is "fared" into the entire dashboard.

So they are adjusting customer expectations from analogue circular dials with rings to digital angular dials without rings and two (or will it be one) screens running the width of the drivers half of the dash.

Maybe this is just a preparation for iDrive 7 and there will be a software update for the G30 in 2019

Maybe an answer for the Mercedes new MBUX System

Rings also missing on mine but also noticed that in sport mode the dials do not turn red anymore, they are grey, anyone has that?

Just came from the showroom and checked out a brand spanking new 2019 530i.... The dash rings are alive and well. In fact, is the same exact US market dash as the 2017 and 2018s

The "thick rings" are still there, if you don't get the Executive Package which comes with the Full Digital Instrument Cluster. As of MY2019 the Full Digital no longer has the "slim rings".

That hybrid display is not the subject of this thread.

Its the thin, decorative chrome rings on the full TFT digital cluster that people are asking about.

I don't even understand why that hybrid display continues to exist at this point.

Well, they have to have something that we can pay money to upgrade FROM.

The hybrid display seems to be offered in varied markets.

Hello, first post...
Getting a 2019 540i M Sport assembled now to replace my beloved 2013 F30 M Sport. I flirted with the 2019 Audi S5 Sportback and the coming A7. While I applaud Audi's tech, lighting, and futuristic design, its negatives outweigh the positives for me. Audi's digital instrumentation set the standard, but how many screens must you view a map on to get where you're going? How many encores of the new A7's impressive LED light show will I marvel at before it gets old? Do I really want instrumentation with no physical buttons? What about fingerprints and smudges on the A7's 3 repetitive LCD touch clusters. I find G30 more luxurious, better handling, and more fun to drive. I happen to like iDrive 6 and BMW's current digital instrumentation -- 3D Surround View, etc. I also like the intelligent placement, functionality, and look of the 540i ceramic control knobs. And who knows when iDrive 7 will actually be implemented in the 5 Series? Not worth the wait, IMO.

Same here. 2019 model. No rings. No red sport display. No chrome inserts on the door handles.

On my 2018, the different displays are adjustable in the Idrive. Mine went to red, and I changed it to all look the same.

In the 2019 cars, there is still a sports display (i.e. it is laid out the same as our red sport displays), but the colour has changed to grey.

I would actually quite the 2019 sports display - I set mine like yours (no change across modes) because the red is just a bit much imo, but I like the more focused layout of the clocks in sports mode. The 2019 approach is good I think.

I wonder if it can be coded?

I can hear BMW sales staff telling customers that BMW removed the rings to allow for an iDrive7 upgrade. "Buy now and next year you'll have a more dazzling screen than you can get in an Audi!"

Even though we all know BMW would never upgrade the iDrive generation once a car is sold.
