Grinding noise on startup
Hi Guys
Second time this has happened in my 540i Xdrive. So, i start the car and withing a second or so i hear a grinding noise which lasts for about a second and then goes. It doesnt happen on each start up. Only twice in the 3 weeks ive had it. Definitely cant be anything internal as its too loud. May even be the starter motor? no errors under check control. Was thinking maybe wait a bit longer and take it dealers if it continues as well as anything else that comes up? |

Yeh I would take it in for them to look at. better safe than sorry.
even if they find nothing , at least it'll be on record so if something crops up at a later date, they know it's not a new occurrence. It under warranty so just the inconvienience of having to take it in. should get a loan car if they need it for the day. (I always enjoy getting a loan car, never know what you get and always interesting to drive something else) |

Does it start when put in gear with foot on brake, ie connected with transmission? I get grinding when foot on brake, stationary in drive. Sounds like the torque converter not disabling fully.

I'd definitely take it in for them to have a look - even if it is nothing as others have said it gets it on their record if something happens in the future.

Hey checking in to see if they sorted out the issue you were having? Mine has been doing this since day one; it even happened I believe while the car was in the delivery room when we were taking delivery. It basically happens very sporadically, after getting into the car the car makes a grinding noise for about a second or so. Sometimes this happens several times a day, sometimes only a few times per week. But it is always after getting into the car, whether it be locked or unlocked, and happens typically 5-10 seconds after opening the door and always before pushing the start button. I had the dealer look at it and they claimed to have heard the sound and replaced some module, but the problem is still there. Mine is a 2018 540i M-sport.

It happens on my G30 and I just came back from dealer today for this "issue", they said it's normal, in the report it says: Vehicle is equipped with several electronic components that "power up" when vehicle is awoken, either through opening door with comfort access or by pressing key fob.

I've had it since getting my 530d since June 2018. Recently I've noticed that it could be the brake pedal when getting into the car? Be good to see other views before I speak to dealer again. When I asked before they said it could be the headlight adjusting which I disagreed with.

This car makes a ton of weird noises. The whirring/grinding noise inside the vehicle is what I assume you're talking about? It almost sounds like it's coming from the B pillars. I sit in my car sometimes and it's long enough that it goes to sleep. Pull the parking brake lever up, or unlock/lock the door and everything wakes up again, along with the whirring noise.

On the whirring noise on entering the car, as part of the wake process, that is normal. My car has done it from day one. No idea what the car is doing, but I don't mind it.

Mines always had a whirring noise / pump noise when I unlock it - I assume it is the fuel pumps pressurising the system or something like that? A grinding noise would definitely be troubling, but I get kind of a high pitched whirr that lasts for 3-4 seconds. Only happens when car is locked overnight or for a good few hours - which leads me to suspect it could well be a fuel pump doing its thing?

The OP said the grinding noise occurs on start up briefly. Is it possible that the starter motor pinion is hanging up a bit and not retracting instantly as it should? Or is the noise more like that of regular car sounds like the mirrors folding in and out, etc. On much older (and simpler) cars I do remember a starter motor pinion once hanging up and causing a grinding noise like you describe. --Bob

This is my eighth BMW since 2004 and none of them have made this noise. It is not a faint noise or the sound of something priming; rather it is a loud, startling grinding noise that lasts for about a second. You can hear it both inside and outside the car. I believe even if you were standing around 25 feet away you can still hear this noise when the car makes it. I believe it to be some sort of faulty part from when the car was built. We ordered this car to spec and my plan was to get an extended warranty and keep it past the original 4 yr warranty. However, if the cause of this noise and resolution cannot be found by BMW, then we likely won't keep it past the four years.

Mine also does this randomly. It is definitely the brake pedal/system as sometimes it has done it when my foots on the brake pedal and you feel the brake pedal move down on its own and a severe vibration/noise. Never taken it back to the dealer as it is totally random when it happens.

Happens to me too. It’s not the soft whirring sound - that happens every time and is normal. This is a short, distinct, louder “rrrrrrr” sound before starting the car. Only happens maybe 2 or 3 times a month.

Occurs on my 540 too. As others have said, it is extremely random, so unlikely to be able to replicate it at the dealer. Definitely a grinding noise linked to the brake pedal which goes slightly soft then firms up right away.

That sounds as if it is some sort of brake servo or ABS module activity.
