Mine has been doing this since day one; it even happened I believe while the car was in the delivery room when we were taking delivery. It basically happens very sporadically, after getting into the car the car makes a grinding noise for about a second or so. Sometimes this happens several times a day, sometimes only a few times per week. But it is always after getting into the car, whether it be locked or unlocked, and happens typically 5-10 seconds after opening the door and always before pushing the start button. I had the dealer look at it and they claimed to have heard the sound and replaced some module, but the problem is still there. Mine is a 2018 540i M-sport.
Hello,

Has anyone on this thread gotten any good resolution on this issue since this was last discussed? This exact same issue as described by PunjabiM3 has started with my car in the last month or so, and it's startling whenever it happens. I can't quite believe it's normal, if it just started happening (my car has about 9,000 miles). If anyone has had a successful resolution, kindly pass along whatever your dealer did as I have an appointment with mine next week.

Thank you all!

I have a feeling it the brake servo/vacuum pump. Only happens when the car sleeps and I primed the brake pedal before starting. Dealer is having issues replicating the issue.

I'll have to work on getting it on video before bringing into service next time.

If you have Auto Hold enabled, try disabling and see if noise goes away.

I also have this problem. 2019 530i. Have it in the shop now but as of Friday they could not duplicate it. They have heard it though. Will update with any new findings.

+1 vote from me about it being something related to a brake servo imo... Seems to be a pre-system check/prime that's performed on power-up (anecdotally more-so if the car's been in a 'deep-sleep' state) - am sure there's a logic as to when this is done, but it's also fairly random (~1 in 20 startups). Had me worried the first couple of times it happened, but i've learnt that it's just one of those quirks.

Happens before you even touch the ignition button and can be quite a startling sound coming from a vehicle that's pretty much in all ways quieter and more refined than the F10.

Shop gave up. Couldn’t reproduce the noise. Of course it happened to me on the way home . Gonna have to try and find out when it happens and try to be able to get it to do it on command.

I have this EXACT issue. Have about 3100 miles, has happened 3-4 times. Caught it once or twice on the dash cam, but the sound quality doesn't do it justice.

It CLEARLY has something to do with the brake, as if you time it right, it almost feels as if the ABS is going off - like a sudden severe priming of the ABS system.

Unfortunately it its truly not reproducible. It has never been associated with any error. It also never happens during driving, so I assume just has something due to the many squeals, priming, pumps that occur when starting up.

The next thing I'm going to do to reproduce is see if priming the brake pedal after the car is off whether that has anything to do with it.

It's weird, loud, and doesn't sound right. But so intermittent how could one call it a 'problem'?

Dealer said the same BS when I sent the video to them... that sounds like the fuel pump priming... Me: no it doesn't...

I had the same issue in a 2015 535i with no cause found and no negative outcomes. This is not a new issue and seems inherent to the design of the car. I quit worrying about it and still heard it from time to time.

So, i start the car and withing a second or so i hear a grinding noise which lasts for about a second and then goes. It doesnt happen on each start up. Only twice in the 3 weeks ive had it.

Definitely cant be anything internal as its too loud. May even be the starter motor? no errors under check control. Was thinking maybe wait a bit longer and take it dealers if it continues as well as anything else that comes up?
Took mine to dealer twice. Showed them this. They said unable to produce the noise, what can you do!

I've been getting this randomly, always catches me off guard and surprises me. Cannot put my finger on how to cause it though.

No it is not as the grinding noise also appears before the car is started. During the start-up of the car after unlocking and before starting

Add another to the list - Mine does this maybe every one time in 20+ after getting into the car. Has done since new.

The noise is jarring but it doesn't worry me at all. If it did it when the engine was running I might be concerned, but it only happens when the electronics are coming to life when I get in, and it just sounds like one of the electronic systems priming itself.

Aside from the fact it occurs randomly, its actual behaviour when it does occur is consistent over the last 2 years and the car works flawlessly.

Thanks. It should probably not be a serious thing....i hope. But from a car that priced should not happen.

On another thought. Does everybody who has this issue have the electric comfort seats?

Hi all,

My electric comfort seat has now been disabled for over 7 weeks and the grinding has not occurred since.

I am suspecting the electric seats.
What is your thought?

My 'grinding', and that of others' from what I am reading, is 100% coming from somewhere forward of the dashboard - engine bay or something just forward of the bulkhead.

Its definitely not my seats or something 'inside' the cabin.

I had similar idea as you had and same description.
Funny how sound may move trough the car.

Will ask my garage to investigate the seat a little further
