M550i low coolant

On my 2018 M550i I got a low coolant light. Car only has 26k miles. Dealer saying car needs 6 coolant lines cause some are leaking. They also stated upper and lower oil pan gaskets are sweating and needs to be changed. Video sent to me shows this also. They are saying it is about $13k in repairs as it is very labor extensive. Lucky I have extended warranty with Route 66 so they will send someone to the dealership to inspect. This to me is insane that a car with low miles needs that much repair. Costly as hell.

Sam, do a search in the forums. IIRC, there was either a Recall or TSB on the 2017-2019's to replace the rubber lines with metal ones because they leak. I know for sure Joe had this done to his car and the dealership knew about the line replacement.

I have a 2022 M550i with less than 7k miles and I am getting periodic "low coolant" warnings.
Just took the car in for service - no issues.
Still getting the warnings.

Anyone know if there are coolant *sensor* issues on the G31 N63?

Did your SA tell you its "normal" for V8's to burn up coolant?
Mine is a 2020 (same engine as yours) and I've been in twice now.
All they do is top it off and pressure test the system and say its OK.
Complete bullshit.

If you're still getting messages, check your big coolant tank up by the driver side of engine. If they did not top off your coolant, i would call and let them have an earful for not doing that for you.

I have a 2020 with the same issue. The SA says it’s normal to burn/lose coolant. I call BS on that. My garage smells like burnt coolant. Not sure what to do.

I have a 2020 and was told it was normal...I'm sure even on the M5 forums "normal" is the SA response. This is the main coolant tank not the turbo intercooler tank.

Mine did it last week @ 12k miles (2021MY) Topped it off at the cost of £12 with Green coolant from the dealer. Low coolant message hasn't come back.

I wonder if the solution to the famous N63 burning off oil issues it to have it burn off coolant instead now haha

Several guys in the M5 forum have had their tanks replaced. Evidently what happens is there are micro cracks that form in the bottom of the tank where its closest to the hot engine. The cracks expand when hot, slowly releasing coolant and burning off when it hits the engine block.
The problem, as someone pointed out in M5, is there is no heat protection underneath the plastic tank. So even if its swapped by BMW under warranty, it will just eventually come back unless you put a thermal barrier in.
One guy made his own.

I cant believe BMW engineers missed such a simple thing to prevent this.

Just bitched to BMW NA and they asked for my VIN and phone number. I have extended warranty with route 66 and inspector went and agreed with dealer but regardless. This should not even be a warranty issue but a recall with so many having this issue. When the replacement part is metal over plastic it tells me they know its an issue and aren't taking responsibility for it.

They went Metal now? The guys in M5 world say the replacement tanks they got were still plastic. Maybe the finally got sick of the complaints and recently redesigned it.

And I agree with you 100%, this should be a RECALL or at least a TSB.

Having the SA's tell customers that coolant loss is "normal" is bullshit.

My mistake for not being clear. I am talking about the lines not the tank. For me several lines are leaking around the turbos.

There is a TSB for leaking turbo lines.

I can't find any info on this. My SA not acknowledging it either. Any links or information?

It was my bad Sam. Things got convoluted with tanks being talked about as the #1 cause of coolant loss/smell. If you look back at your thread, my first response was BMW knows about the leaking rubber turbo lines and you should not have to pay for the metal upgrades. There is a TSB on it.

You should not pay anything IMO...........especially for a leaking oil cover gasket. Which is ridiculous to me on a car costing so much.

No worries. I've mentioned to my SA there is a TSB with no reply. At this point I hopey warranty covers it all. Warranty inspector went out and agreed to all repairs so I am crossing my fingers they will take care of all costs minusaube deductible.

Nice. LMK how it worked out with the warranty. My factory expires in 0ct 2023 and I need a good company.

Mine had said the same with 10k miles. I bought bmw coolant off Amazon. Mixed it up and topped it off. 30k later still no issues. I just think they don't feed enough into the lined and when car drives certain amount sensors go off. I refuse to go to dealer for dumbshit

I saw their video of the lines just leaking all over. No scam here.

Update: warranty company, route66 is covering the coolant leaks with turbo lines. About $8500. They will not cover the oil sweat from the oil pan because the inspector went there and saw no failure. No actual leak or anything that has failed. He said idrive isn't even saying you need oil. He said if it gets to that point and becomes a leak then they would also cover that. I'm more than happy with that arrangement. My cost will be diagnostic fee and coolant. So far this has been a good experience, little slow but it's ok. It's a 7 year 120k mile warranty through my credit union that I paid $2700 for and it's already paid off.

They're making you pay for the coolant ? That doesnt make sense to me. If the repair is covered under warranty, and is the reason you lost coolant, why shouldnt the coolant be covered? I know its probably $15, but still I dont get that.
