2023 BMW M550i - Quiet Exhaust & Laggy Throttle

What's up everyone?

Over the summer I purchased one of the few remaining M550s in the North East as I've had my eyes on that car for some time. I also have a 2022 X5 M50i. Two surprises, especially having experience with my X5 and the same engine, is how quiet the exhaust is and how laggy throttle is. The X5 sounds louder and much peppier. I've read several other members complaining of the same, but wondering if it's a 2023 thing.

I changed the setting to start with valves open - made a difference, but again, much quieter than my X5. The lag is consistent.

Anyone with a 2023 (or other MY) agree with this? For a resolution, I've seen Dinan and Remus for exhaust and for the lag I saw the Dinan throttle booster. If anyone has made those changes, would love to hear the improvement. (or lack thereof)

Thanks all - love this forum btw, as you can see from my low post count, I know how to use the search function pretty well

I have a 2021 and personally I do not feel any lag in the pedal at all. Can’t speak to the loudness because I have no comparison but I get a nice growly cold start in sport mode.

I will absolutely advocate for REMUS Cat-back exhaust. Recently installed one of these systems on my 2022 m550i. I wasn’t having any throttle lag like you’re describing but with the addition of the exhaust the throttle response in sports+/sports individual is extremely responsive.

Dm or let me know if you want any sound clips, pics, or vids of the exhaust

The early 2021 LCI M550's had throttle lag problems.
I thought they solved it with a software update, but I would mention it to your SA and have them look at it.

Hello. I have a '21 with the throttle lag. A soft tip in will result in brisk acceleration. Launch control guarantees no lag Regional tech drove my car and mentioned that his X5 M50 exhibits the same lag. So it's a mix of yes/no for lag. Software update only helps with launch control. I've accepted this defect and just have to be aware of the lag in certain conditions.

I don’t think 2021 had “throttle lag” problem. The problem was at standing launch control the engine would not hold boost hence a lame 0-60 time. But that was not affecting normal driving. And it was fixed via software patch anyway some time in late 2021.

So 2023 didn’t have that problem from the beginning. Your car may have other issue if you even find laggy throttle at Sport Plus on engine.

Regarding exhaust, my 2021 has become super quiet after a couple of software updates earlier this year. I’m very upset about it. It sounds to me not much different than a 4-cylinder car even at Sport Plus. No pops, no crackles, no bangs, no nothing.

2 things to try

Laggy throttle. Perform throttle adaptation reset then drive it hard for a few weeks

Lack of exhaust noise. Put it in sport plus manual mode and drive it like a maniac for a few weeks. Ie Wide open throttle 4-6000rpm gas it like a mad man for a few weeks.

These 2 will retrain the computer. Whether the computer will respond, I've heard mixed results. It worked for my m340i.

No lag here. First comment, steer clear of pedal commanders and such, it is just fake sense of improvement. All it does is give it more gas with less depression. It won't help lag. I don't have any throttle lag or issues on mine though.

In terms of exhaust, the G30 is heavily insulated. You will not hear the exhaust with the windows closed and even with them open, it is hard to hear the stock exhaust. Dinan or Remus will improve that, but I am guessing the sound is the same as your X5 it's just you can hear the X5 better from the cabin. My X5 is not nearly as insulated as my M550.

My M340 wants to go just looking at the pedal. My M550 needs quite a bit of motivation in comparison. I have a loaner 760 and it is similar to my M550. M550 should be better imo. It's a sportier car.

You can’t compare a 3 & 5, m lite or not. A 3 series will always feel quicker & more nimble than its 5 series ‘equivalent’

M340 will be sprung and damped a little stiffer, as it is slightly more sport focused. Also, the B58 is much lighter than the V8. The 540 turns in better than the M550, too.

The "M Performance" designation in the M550 has no effect on the suspension, which is standard 704 M-Sport, but with the option for adaptive dampers in combination.

If you want the 5 to handle like a 3, start with new dampers. The weight difference between a 5 and a 3 isn't much, and non-V8 5ers can even be lighter depending on spec.

I’m considering the same exhaust on the same car & I’d love to see/hear some video!

Also - I love the Remus carbon fiber / titanium exhaust tips but I for that much money I’d really prefer to not have the white logo. Curious what tips you chose

I have the same set up X5 M50 and a ‘21 M550 no lag, but to your point theres definitely a difference in the sound even in changing the engine sound through idrive. I just thought it might be because the body is bigger and sits up higher…
