Front Lower Flap - check engine light

2017 - G30/530i

I got a check engine light last week and took it to dealer - I was told they found 2 issues - software needed to be updated and front lower flap needed to be replaced

I understand the front lower flap under bumper opens and closes based on cooling needed.. has anyone had same issue?

It's covered under warranty but surprised something so simple failed already.. also, what typically damages this?

The lower and upper grill flap fail very very commonly on G30 and G11/G12. It is a well known issue. From newer Istep the dont even show CEL for this fault.

I believe these flaps have now been extended warranty-wise; 15 yrs?

This is correct. Not sure on the duration but quite a while, yes.

Yeah I find my active grille stays stuck in open position for 2-3 days very often if I start my car in sport mode. It should be a software problem since my grilles always work for 1-2 months before the problem comes back again. The check engine light always went away in a day or two so I never bothered getting it fixed.

Check engine light solved by flap replacement and software update on my 2018 M550 a couple weeks ago.
