M550i build
I ordered my M550i the day before Thanksgiving. The dealer had to get a slot from BMW because other dealers were holding their M550i slots for a small ransom. I got a WW4 build that just started today with a 1/19 estimated finish date, so WW3. Hopefully they have figured out a of the port and transportation issues. I am hopeful to get the car by mid February or sooner as I sold my Audi S6 in early November!
For the record, I got the Mediterranean Blue with Ivory interior. I have the fineline ridge wood trim and the 759 wheels. I got all the packages, the dynamic cluster, the window shades, the B&W stereo and the rear entertainment system. I am excited about being back with BMW. My last one was a E46 M3 in mystic blue. |

Like you, I loaded up on options but I did skip the rear seat entertainment (I rarely have folks in the back seat) and the alcantara headliner (I don't look up) but pretty much got everything else. |

I did not get the night vision system. I had it in the Audi and it wasn't that great. I didn't demo the tech in BMW and it is newer so it could be better. What do you think about it? I am hopeful in 3 years it will improve. I have lots of fog and deer by my house..... I got the rear entertainment for the kids. They have tablets, but this is easy and always has power. If they use it great, if not then I will stop buying rear entertainment! |

I called BMW Genius and while they didn't give me the code, they gave me the description of 155 and said I should be finished today, which is on schedule. Looks like I get to wait on transportation now .... probably another month.

I just found out from BMW Genius that my car is about to leave for port or has left for port. I get to call back in about a week and see what ship it is on. Oh the waiting ...

BMW website now says production end on 1/25, when the car was done on 1/19. So nice of them to catch up to reality!!
PS: I am mainly documenting my experience so others after me can compare. I know I followed other threads in the past and found it helpful. |

My port will be Georgia. I have not heard about a ship yet. I am traveling for work and I have not harassed the BMW Genius line for this info yet. Is your car on that boat?

Yep. The Morning Charlotte left Bremerhaven on Jan-27. Supposed to arrive Port Hueneme (LA) on Feb-24 by way of Zeebrugge, Southampton, and Baltimore.
I figured your build might go overland from Baltimore to Knoxville. Thanks for posting the details on your build and timeline. My build has all packages except DHP. I went Alpine White, Black Nappa, Burl Walnut, and stock wheels/tires. I skipped the backseat stuff but got the sunshade, fancy instrument cluster, and B&W. For me, comfort was a bigger priority than pure performance. Not that the M550i will be a slouch in the latter department... I'm not sure if I got lucky with my dealer having an allocation or the package/option/color specifics make a difference. But here's my timeline: Dec-24 -- Order placed (There is a Santa Claus!) Jan-16 -- Build scheduled for completion Jan-19* -- Status: Otis Redding (sitting on the dock of the bay) Jan-30* -- On the Morning Charlotte (In the English Channel when I checked) The asterisks indicate the two times I called BMW Genius. |

Your car sounds like it will have a classic look white on black with stock wheels. You will be a sleeper! |

When my car was in production I called the production status line a few times and was also told two different dates for completion: Jan-16 and Jan-11. I never believed the Jan-11 date. But it's weird that we both got two completion dates with five days separating them. Something glitch in their system? I was able to predict the boat my car got on. For east coast deliveries I think it's a bit more difficult to predict -- For west coast bound cars it seems that W&W are the only shipper. My intention is to further cement my car's sleepiness by de-badging. I'm even thinking about re-badging with a 530i trunk decal... |

How often have you been checking marinetraffic.com? They show Horizon Highway as en route from Southamption to Baltimore, arriving on Feb-15. Is Feb-19 when it's scheduled to clear the VPC? |

Well so far 3 times, but I have the flu and not quite myself right now. The BMW Genius line said that my car will make port at Brunswick, Georgia. . Baltimore is about the same distance and 4 days earlier. It will be 3 months and some change before I get my car. This limited production of the M550 sucks.

Best of luck with the bug -- after many boxes of tissue, and lots of tylenol, our household seems to be over the worst of some kind of illness. Hopefully that's the end for this season. |

So you guys are saying that, at max, 9 days might go by from when production is done until it finds it's way onto a ship? My car just got done and had the quality check today.....hoping it makes it on a ship this weekend but hopefully next week at latest. Dealer said it will be here next month for sure.

EDIT: Never mind, I read the sticky on tracking the car...
How do you find out which ship it's on? Per bmwusa.com my M550i is on a boat. Probably headed to Charleston, being a PCD. Because of that, I won't see it until 3/21. Although I'll gladly accept an earlier date of possible.

The definitive source indicates the following: -Build start (150) to build finish (155): 1-2 weeks. -Build finish (155) to Scheduled for Carrier (182): 1 day. -Status 182 to 190 (on a train to bremerhaven):1-3 days. -Status 190 to 193 (at port awaiting a ship): 1-2 days. -Status 193 to 195 (on a ship): 3-5 days for east coast delivery, 5-12 days for west coast delivery (more detail on this later) -Shipping time from Bremerhaven to East Coast: 12-17 days depending on the number of stops. -Shipping time from Bremerhaven to West Coast: About 30 days. -Offload at port: 1 day -Processing through customs: 1-2 days -Process through BMW Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) and onto a carrier: 2-5 days. -Shipping time on carrier to Dealership: 1-4 days. So, best case scenario, six days from production completion to being on a boat. Worst case, 18 days. The definitive source: http://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1315141 |
