Traded my 2018 M550i in on a 2023 GMC Denali

Yesterday, I traded in my 2018 M550i on a new GMC Sierra 1500 Denali truck. What is surprising to me is that the GMC dealer has 17 BMWs in their used car inventory, including three M550i's, a 750, an X7, and an M8. The new truck I bought is very comparably equipped to my old M550i and has the 6.2L V8 with 420 h.p. and 455 ft.lb. of torque. Is anyone else surprised that a GMC dealer has so many high-end BMWs taken in trade?

Despite being an ex-employee of GM corporate, you’re not going to feel the same love when you go to the dealership when it comes to the service department. They’ll shuffle you off to enterprise when you need a loaner car. At least you got the Denali trim. It’s a nice truck. I used to have one just like it when I was still racing.

Due to the car shortage, dealers will buy cars from auctions, individuals and any other method they can find. Those BMW on the lot most likely aren't all trade-ins. This might be slowly shifting due to the high interest rate, but I believe this is still at play.

There is a KIA dealership around 30 minutes away from that you would think is a exotic car dealership lol. Got Ferraris, Lambos, McLarens- they got them all!

I do my own maintenance, so I hope to avoid the service department unless a warranty repair is required. I honestly wasn't impressed with the service department at the BMW dealer. Yes, I could reserve a complimentary loaner when I needed service, but that usually meant scheduling weeks out, and I never got a car remotely comparable to the M550i. Typically I'd get an X1 or X2 and on a good day, maybe a 3 series. The best service experience I've ever had has been with my wife's Lexus.

Never underestimate the power of giving concert tickets or sports tickets to your service advisor. I have been doing that for decades and it’s amazing how much they will do for you when you bring your car in for service. I’ve actually developed some lifelong friendships from previous service advisors that started with a free pair of tickets.

I can see that. I definitely see the market shifting now with more inventory available.

I could not agree more. When I bought my Chevy Silverado crew cab diesel dually (LT3) in 2007 to tow my race trailer, I was not prepared for the service experience (warranty). Yikes. You will have the opportunity to meet new and interesting people in the waiting room is the nicest way I can put it. Loved the truck. Thing would tow comfortably and quietly for hours and hours. The duramax/allison combo was magic.

At the tail end of my employment with General Motors, and right after I quit racing, I decided it was time to buy another Jeep. I ordered it exactly the way I wanted it, and I had nothing but problems with it from day one. All of that aside, I had forgotten how bad the service was an American car company dealerships. I mean they treated me like I was a criminal. I had so many problems with that thing that they could not seem to fix that I ended up trading it in after only one month and 1,000 miles on a new 2017 BMW X6. I’ll never leave the BMW family again. I should never have left in the first place.
