holy moly, we're a year away from the federal mandate and BMW is launching this luxury sedan with the rear view camera as an option. Looks like option packages will move around for MY18.

Isn't the back up camera pretty much a standard when you opt for idrive screen (with nav or without)?

I think back when cars had 0 to 60 times of six or seven seconds, that specification could be useful for something about how powerful a car was. But now days I don't think it means very much when the cars are in the 3.5 to 4.5 second range due to traction issues. But if you like accelerating to 60 from a stop all the time then I guess you could have some fun with it. Other than that, I think that the 0-60 spec is pretty useless these days to describe how powerful a car is on the highway or autobahn. But who knows? My statement is just one man's opinion. |

I care a lot more about 0-60mph times than HP and torque numbers, or top speed numbers. I rarely have the need to rush or beat a car starting from 50mph and going to 80mph, even with all the highway driving I do (no autobahns here ). But I definitely do have the need all the time to ensure I can get from 0-40mph or 35 to 50mph quickly. To me, those times are the most important since I actually use them all the time. If they're fast, and fun in the process, that's perfect. Also, 0-60mph I think is more representative of all the engineering involved rather than just having brute force. It is not as simple as having a more powerful engine. The drivetrain has to be tuned correctly, the tires have to be designed correctly to adequately find the balance between grip/traction and efficiency, the weight has to be placed perfectly and suspension tuned right to get that proper acceleration, and so on. Just more representative of a car IMO than a simple HP/Torque comparison. |

What is a sensatec dashboard? Similar to a base dash now? No leather dash option?

I think dynamically it will eat it, but again I haven't driven the G30, did have a f10 550i for 3yrs and it still is a great car with an awesome v8 motor. I totally agree with idea of the 0-60 times, but anything beyond 85 mph normally doesn't matter stateside unless your http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...trumented-test I want to say the question is how much does the M550i weight with AWD, that will be the sign of things to come with the next gen m5 as it will get a diet with carbon fiber colbertnation Dackelone Last edited by DocWeatherington; 01-06-2017 at 05:59 PM.. |

Not sure but I assume it is a man made leather like material, I would think it's cheaper to produce and probably way more durable for baking in the sun. I think leather dash may be an option in the future on the M550i and M5 |

Sport mode with ESP off. 0-96kmh (60mph):4.87 secs 0-100kmh (62mph): 5.31 secs. 0-161kmh (100mph): 11.2 secs. 0-200kmh (124mph): 17.14 secs. 0-209kmh (130mph): 18.62 secs. 0-250kmh (155mph): 30.33 secs. To give you an idea compared to the previous 550i (Auto): http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...trumented-test Zero to 60 mph: 4.8 sec Zero to 100 mph: 11.0 sec Zero to 130 mph: 19.0 sec So the new 540i is about as fast as the last gen 550i

So no, in the hyper competitive world of automotive 0-60 times, the new 540 is not "about" as fast as the last 550. |

Right. This is the first I've heard of it being used on the dash. The dash on my E39 M5 is leather, and I believe the optional leather dash on the F10 M5 and F8X M3/4 is also leather. I wonder if the new M cars will have Sensatec dashes as well. Makes sense as the leather on the dash is so thin and stretched tight, you probably can't tell the difference.

I'd be a bit concerned about leather drying out on the dash facing the hot sun all day, year after year... I'm interested to see if this sensatec dash is smooth or textured.
