Muffler delete - Learnt a lesson the hard way
So I was back in town for the weekend and decided to go get a muffler delete - did that and boy from the moment I left the muffler shop, I was feeling a bit weird - almost like a teenage boy in a decked up honda or a mazda lol.
My wife sat in the car a few hours later and the first statement is - why is this car making a sound like that of a truck! My heart just sank lol. It just confirmed my thoughts as well that it just makes the car sound and feel very teenage'ish and cheap lol. To each his own but this definitely is not for me! Going right back to the shop tomorrow to get the muffler put back on. |

That's funny cause that's exactly what I didn't want to do I have a 328 and wanted the mtech dual number not a fan of the single and was afraid to do straight pipe ended up buying a stock 335is exhuast and used th the mufflers only and I was nerves to turn the car on when it was done but it sounds perfect for me completely stock sounding better then a 328 and a little less then a 335 wife didn't even notice till she asked about the bumber

Also I feel that it does affect the pick up of the car - again this is in my opinion and maybe its just in my head now that I am not liking the sound lol. Also I did find it misfire once. I guess you got me thinking now...let's see.

It's more likely that you just got used to the sound. There's not really any structural reason the sound would change.

Its completely age related – trust me – and given the fact that you mentioned “a wife” that tells me you are old enough to have a little less tolerance for loud exhausts (whether they be tin can sounding or throaty) and more importantly “drone” at any consistent speed / nothing wrong with that…but even before I opened your thread and simply read the title – I smiled to myself

I have been debating the muffler delete in my e92 as well. Been listening to youtube clips and the sound isn't too bad but I'm afraid of the drone sound heard inside the car.

To the OP, what engine do you have? I have the N52 and my muffler delete droned like no other when I first drove home from the shop. Like you I wanted to drive right back. But I let things settle first and it has broken in nicely over the past 7 months. I even get compliments left and right about the sound. No joke. |

I listened to a lot of youtube videos before I got mine done. IMO, it actually sounds a lot different in person so I wouldn't make your decision just off of youtube videos. |

Here is mine. Honestly I hated the rasp in the PE. That exhaust was a joke at 1,000 dollars and others were 500 or more, and since I wanted a dual exhaust I would be hacking it up anyway. I figured I would start with the muffler delete, knowing I could always add a muffler later. But I love it.

That's why you buy a proper exhaust... Of course chopping a muffler off is gonna sound like a "decked out honda"... cause that what they do!

Most of my driving is in the city and it doesn't drone. Only on the highway so if most of my driving was like that then I would probably want a muffler back on as well. But the sound is amazing outside the car. And there's a ton of burbles/overrun when in DS mode. |

They're right when they say that everyone has different opinions. People on here might like it just because of the type of community you're asking. However, the majority of people would likely agree a muffler delete sounds pretty bad.
If you're at all concerned with annoying passengers, neighbors, or anybody else, just get an aftermarket exhaust. They make them for a reason. If you don't care about any of those things and like the sound of the delete, go ahead and do it. |

You could also try the Active Autowerke exhaust for the N52's. I personally like the way it sounds quite a bit--very mature. I'd call it an understated, yet quintessentially classic BMW sound.
