WA - Battery Registration / Fault Code Reset
Not sure if this would fit in the Classified section and I'm sure a lot of people already have code scanners / cables, but I thought I'd just throw this out there!
...My factory battery finally gave way ('06 E90) so I swapped in a new equivalent (same aH, slightly higher CCA, same dimensions etc) but found out you have to register the battery for extended life... (I'm new to BMW, I used to work on much older cars.. lots of stuff learnt so far...) I also forgot to plug in the black plug connected to the safety equipment prior to connecting up the new battery (doh), so had the seatbelt and airbag fault codes fire. To resolve all this and after some research I now possess a C110 BMW Code Scanner (for resetting the safety fault codes) and BMWLogger software combined with an K+DCAN Cable (for battery registration). Going to try installing INPA/DIS some time too but looks like a headache to setup. So... If anyone in WA (SOR) needs a battery registered or fault code read/reset I'm happy to help you out for free of course |

I've got a laptop setup to do coding, Alpina TCU flash and battery reset but I am super slow as I have stopped doing it since I sold my car.

That's not quite correct. You still need to set it up properly and that's the annoying and hardest part at times.

Testercles: Depends on what your trying to do.
1) K+D Can Cable (~$20) + BMWLogger (Software - Free) - Easy to setup - Can Register Batteries. 2) K+D Can Cable (~$20) + INPA/DIS (BMW Leaked Software - "Free") - Effort to install/setup software as it is very picky on Operating System/etc as mentioned by Erik - Can Register Batteries, Read/Erase Fault Codes and "Coding". 3) BT Tool - http://www.bavariantechnic.com/ - Cable + Software - Easy to Use, $179 to $795 USD depending on features. Can Register Batteries, Read/Erase Fault Codes and "Coding". 4) Fault Code Reader/Scanner like C110 ($~60) - Can Read/Erase Fault Codes. I went with route 1 and 4 as was the easiest/fastest/cheapest to do what I needed at the time :P |

There are some really good guides out there in terms of coding and diagnostics.
If you'd like I can compile some links, but google/piratebay are your friends. I've mine working with INPA/DIS/NCSExpert for about a year now. The software that came with my eBay cable worked fine out of the box, and was in english, however I get greater compatibility with a newer version of INPA that is partly in German so I'm using that at the moment. Probably the biggest tip in terms of getting everything set up is to find a 32bit laptop running windows XP - I'm using one I bought in 2006. I'm fairly sure a lot of the finnicky aspects are getting compatibility with 64bit and windows 7 INPA/NCSExpert can do pretty much everything you want quickly and simply, so don't worry if you can't get DIS working. I've only had to resort to DIS once to help a mate with a broken electronic steering lock, the rest has just been fiddling around to see what I can do with it. |
