Roundel's Satch on M4's Exhaust
Got my copy of Roundle magazine today. There is a review of the M4. Not going to post the whole article, you all should be BMWCCA members and you will have your copy. If not, go join the club and the HPDE classes your local club offers.
But I thought I would post Satch's take on the M3/M4's exhaust, and whose panties all get in a bunch

Fine BMW, thanks, but why oh why can't I turn it off? it would simple as pie to include in the MMI.
Answer: marketing. If you could turn it off then ALL of us would. And BMW knows this. Thus Satch's conclusion is crap, for the question is would Satch keep it on if he could turn it off? Would any of you? |

I would turn it off and keep it off so I could hear my Akrapovic exhaust that I plan on putting on.

Satch is a good man, excellent driver and instructor, and a 11/10 fan boy. He's the editor of Roundel. He's not going to bash BMW.
I've heard it in person... true, Ihaven't heard it bouncing off canyon walls, but it's not a thrillng sound that makes the hairs on your neck tingle or stand up like he makes it out to sound. IMO. .

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I heard it. I don't know what to think of it. It's weird sounding on the inside with the windows up. I couldn't really hear the exhaust with the windows down. I did hear the latest gen M5 on the track and that exhaust note sounded really good. Snarly, as Satch would say.

I'd be really surprised to read, "yeah I"m definitely getting the fake sound" - people would and will just do an exhaust mod or swap out. You have to pay for the MPE (and I bet a LOT) ...
Further, this couldn't have been cheap to design, test, and implement ... and they KNOW it's going to be controversial ... but they did it anyway and it's in the price of your car whether you like it or not. I can't think of a single customer-oriented justification for this behavior and I have no idea why Satch or anyone else would defend it ... it would seem the only fair review is: "the car sounds [adjectives] to me but I don't know how much is real and how much is fake" Personally I'll be coding this out at the first opportunity and then we can poll for all those leaving it uncoded but coding other things. Prediction: zero people will leave this on but code out other things. |

This may be the first car to ever sound louder on the inside than it does on the outside.
