HUD and polarized sunglasses

Haven't seen anyone with a car comment. Can you see the HUD well with polarized lenses?

I can see mine with my polarized sun glasses. When I first got the car, the brightness was mid level and it was very tough to see... turned it up and now it is dim (compared to without polarized glasses) but DEFINITELY viewable without any issues. The only issue is in the "sport" view with the tachometer, the tach is a grey color and harder to see but everything else is fine.

Same results with both my Ray Ban and Maui Jim polarized glasses... more dim but definitely viewable.

In HUD settings there is a setting to change the tilt of your display. This will make it more viewable with polarized lenses.

Hmm, I never saw that setting but that makes sense. The HUD was dim, but visible with my polarized lenses while I was driving around Europe. I will try that setting change once it is back in the states.

Yes this worked for me as well with my Ray Ban Sunglasses. In addition as another poster comments if you play with the Tilt setting of the HUD slightly it also notably improves visibility. In the end polarized glasses are a non-issue with some slight changes to settings. I love the clarity of polarized glasses and would not give that up especially on long drives.

Thanks for the info! I agree I love the polarized lenses but hated to lose ability to use the HUD- glad to know can adjust settings so can still use HUD!

HUD and Polarized Sunglasses

Hey all,

Forgive my ignorance if this has been discussed but I did : and did not find anything. I recently did the BMW UDE where I got to take the M3 out on a test drive. I noticed that my Oakley polarized sunglasses almost completely blank out the HUD display. If I remove them (or tilt my head 90 degrees) it is bright and clear. Is this just going to be a fact of life?

yeah it's annoying. they apparently added a rotation to the HUD to address this problem but it doesn't work at all. you rotate it fully in both directions and you still can't see it.

The HUD issue is brand-specific. I have a set of polarized Ray-Bans that do not impair view of the HUD in the least. My polarized Pradas almost completely erase it.

+1 to this.

I have Ray Bans that completely block the HUD.
Then I have 2 pairs of Oakleys that, while dimming the HUD somewhat, still allow me to read it

That makes sense. Polarization is all about rotation angle. I guess I will need to find a pair that has their polarization at 90 degrees off from my current pair.

Thanks for humoring me.

p.s. That was my first drive in a true M. My GOD!!! What have I been missing?!?!?!

The hook has been set.

Btw... there was a thread on this topic. I wear oakleys and it does dim the hud a lot, but I can still read it.

It's not brand-specific. It's horizontal vs. vertical polarization specific. I can't recall which one works, i have a pair of Oakleys and the HUD is perfectly clear and bright with them.

This is correct. However, with new DLP based upcoming systems (other cars than BMW), this issue will disappear.
Hopefully, BMW will adopt it down the road.

I figured there might be one but I just couldn't find it.

And as for the hook, I was wondering what that pain in my mouth was. This is reason I flat refused to take out an M5 and never test drove an M3 when I was looking at my current car. That kind of power has a way of changing people.
