UPDATE: Dealer replaced the muffler. Rattle sound is fixed for now. Here is a video of cold start with the replacement exhaust.

BMW dealer just ordered new muffler for my M4. There is some defect inside of the rear section that causes a loud metal on metal rattle when the flaps are closed (especially on cold start!)

Every time is start my car I cringe because it sounds like I'm starting up a broken lawn mower, people stare, and I try to get the car warm as fast as possible so the sound goes away.

New muffler is back ordered and won't arrive for another 3 weeks. What do you think is the cause of the defect in the muffler, have other people had this issue?

Also, I have the initial break in service and they didn't have the oil plugs that were needed. They did the service anyway and said I could come back later for the plugs, as it wasn't necessary. What do you think?

That's interesting.
Please see if you can have dealer let you know exactly what part of rear muffler is causing that issue.

From your description, the sound seems like it's coming from flap mechanism itself.

I am experiencing the same issue. My dealer recommended replacement of the exhaust. I picked up my car this morning with a new exhaust. Exact same obnoxious rattle as before.

Would love to hear more from both posters in this thread who have had exhaust issues. Mine makes fairly loud rattle from the exhaust when first started that lasts for several minutes. Sounds like a rattletrap POS. Once warm the sound is less but still present. Otherwise I love the exhaust.

My original understanding was that this was relatively normal behavior for the M3/4 exhaust but if BMW has decided that this is a "flaw" I'd sure like to get rid of it.

Must be a flaw as most don't have this issue

I am getting this rattling issue as well. It happens on startup and I notice it on low speeds even after driving around for a bit. Sometimes if I kick it into Sport or Sport + I dont notice it but i'm sure theres some type of issue similar to yours. I'm taking it for break in service this Friday, i'll send an update afterwards.

well the technical docs (and the manual?) clearly state that the plugs/screws must be replaced and are one-time use only, so I'd insist on that regardless what the dealer is saying.

good luck and have fun!

I agree but the dealer is saying that they cannot get the plugs and screws yet. It's been a month!

In my F80, after my 1200 service and another 500 miles this weekend, I'm experiencing this same loud metallic noise, apparently from the exhaust. Thought it went away after driving, but heard it again as I parked.

Sent a note to the dealer to see if a muffler replacement is in order. Fingers crossed never hear it again.

Here is a video with the original exhaust. It's not taken on cold start so the sounds aren't quite comparable, but you can hear the loose metallic noise from the exhaust revs.

I still cannot decide whether I have "the problem". It seems to me that the rattling that I am getting comes in the first couple of minutes when the exhaust is cold. This would suggest that the open valve flaps (which I believe are open in the first couple minutes) are causing the rattle. I am going to remove one of the electronic flap valves this weekend if possible to see if anything can be tightened up.

I disconnect the harness that controls these valves (aka golf tee mod) with the valves open and I no longer have the startup rattle.

I was hoping this was just a noise that would go away after the exhaust gets broken in a bit, but I'm still getting this also.

Will have to schedule another appt with dealer....

Here's a sound clip of mine cold. I have no idea how to upload the sound clip I made with my phone, so it's a YouTube clip with a pic of my car

Same here but mostly on cold start-up. Sounds like a sad rattling lawnmower.

It didn't sound like this on delivery, but the rattle has begun at just over 250 miles.

My neighbor approached me yesterday thinking something was wrong with my car. I shouldn't have to make excuses for an 80k+ vehicle.

I plan on having this, and some other annoying noise issues addressed at my 1200 mile service. Other than the sounds, its great!

Having the same problem with mine. Just finished my ED. Please keep us update as to what BMW states. Would love to have it repaired when it reaches my dealer in the states.

My service advisor told me it's 100% normal for it to sound like that for a minute or two, when I questioned them about it.

Please keep us posted about your outcome. If new exhaust indeed fixes it, i'd like to know how long it will stay fixed. Would be unfortunate if problem came back after some time due to something getting looser in the exhaust.
