M Performance Shifter and E-Brake Install

Easy diy job, no tools.

Here is prior with stock shift knob:

carefully unclip boot around all edges and pull up:

Grip shift knob and pull up sharply. Pull hard it will come off (keep face away unless you want a black eye).

Push new shift knob down hard and reclip new boot on all sides

E-brake before:

Unclip starting with top back, work your way down, its a little tighter than the gaiter for the shift knob.

Once fully unclipped, grab brake handle and pull forward hard, again it simply slides off with enough force.

Slide new e-brake handle on and clip into place.

Finished product:

Thanks for this DIY! Can you clarify how do you unclip the base? Do you just pull the edge toward the interior? How many clips there are?

Ok, just wanted to confirm the steps from the OP (with some more comments).

Unclipping the boot for the shift knob is VERY easy. I used the following plastic tools to help but I think it was overkill. Not sure you need any tools actually...just push the edge toward the interior.

However pulling the shift knob itself was a pain. In my case, I needed to pull like a mad man. To the point where I almost gave up and started doubting the steps mentioned here. It came out eventually but it was scary to break something. Installing the CF one is trivial and takes 30 seconds at most.

The handbrake was easier in my case. Like OP said, it's a bit tighter so maybe the plastic tool is needed here. Open the center console and start unclipping from the top and go from there. Sliding out the hand brake was not too bad - I twisted a bit while pulling forward and it came out somewhat easily. Installing the CF one is trivial.

Overall, the whole replacement for both pieces took less than 5 minutes.

another method to remove shift knob

I tried another method after struggling unsuccessfully to get the knob off while sitting in the front seats. I opened the moonroof and then straddled the console and wrapped my hands around the knob from above while squatting over it with my head sticking out of the roof opening. Then it was easy to pull the knob off, like pulling up a tent stake. Leg are a lot stronger for pulling than arms alone.

I did this too, but wacked the back of my head on the sunroof edge when it came off lol.
