OEM Winter Tire Packages

Has anyone inquired as to the price of an OEM winter tire package for the car and what they are recommending for Style, Sizes, Rubber?

I live in Canada, getting to be that time of year

The stuff they have on the site for the 1-series should give you a good idea. If memory serves prices were not insane but Blizzaks were not an option. If you check tire rack you can do an 18" Enkei or 17" BBS either with Blizzak and tire insurance for under $2k. Enkei touring take OEM center caps and BBS is a 56mm you can find a knockoff on EBay.

I have two questions:

when would be the best time to buy a winter setup? now or closer to the winter?

how do I know which brands of wheels are good? other than the most mentioned brands such as Enkei, Blizzak, etc.

Fair enough, just don't want to end up with 17's that don't clear the brakes. Or has this been disproven? I also like oem look myself...

As for buying the winter setup I would buy it when you want them on the car. Streamlines the process. Unless it's sales you are concerned with.

Since we have so many questions about fitment I'd wait until when you want to switch. No sense in ordering now, sitting them in the garage for a few months then having a headache returning if they don't work out. Selection will be better in fall too.

For tires Blizzak is generally regarded as the standard by most but like anything else read reviews and do your research. Same can be said for wheels. When in doubt you're probably safer with getting an inexpensive wheel from someplace that makes expensive wheels. So the BBS SR, for instance, works on our cars and is $215 per. That's by far the low end of BBS you can spend close to $1k per or more. Contrast that to sport edition which is tire rack's house brand they're all inexpensive. BBS won't ruin their reputation and harm sales of high end stuff by putting their name on crap, so even the inexpensive options are quality. Yes there are exceptions to that guideline but if you're not sure what you're getting that's at least a safe rule of thumb.

Oh one other thing BBS actually makes a lot of the wheels for BMW and Alpina even. So a lot of the OEM stuff is in fact made by BBS.

I've been told the 17" will be fine by both BBS and Tire Rack, no spacers or anything crazy necessary. Have found center caps that fit too on eBay. PM if you want me to email you links I'll forget and I'm not near a PC.

17". I was thinking 18" when I was unsure of 17" fitment but smaller is good, narrower is good so since there's a 17" that will fit that's the way to go.

The biggest issue I have encountered thus far with looking for winter tires is the staggered wheel size. More specifically the size of the rears. I'm not that fond of the stock M235i wheels so I don't mind sacrificing them for my winter set. That being said, finding rubber to fit the stock fronts doesn't seem to be a problem but the extra width on the rears is causing some issues. I'v only found one manufacturer that creates a winter tire in the OEM tire size for the rears and weirdly enough it shows up as a winter tire specifically for a Lamborghini. Call me cheap if you like but even the cheapest winter wheel/tire packages are still running upwards of $2500 north of the border. Why did BMW use such an oddball wheel size without making sure that there was sufficient support from the tire manufactures.

Spoke w Tire Rack today. The 30-day return does not apply for fitment issues, so you're safe to buy now and install in Nov/Dec and if they don't fit Tire Rack will have them picked up for a full refund.
